What to Do When Your Save File Fails to Upload to Save Editor

Updated

If your save won't upload to saveeditonline.com, the cause is almost always one of four things: the file is too large, the browser can't read it from its current folder, you pasted binary data into the Paste code box, or the site was briefly updating. Work through the checks below in order — most upload failures clear after the first two.

Check the file size against the maximum limit

Save Editor enforces a maximum file size, and the error message tells you the exact number when you exceed it:

  • "File is too large. {0} MB maximum file size." — your file is bigger than the per-file limit.
  • "Upload failed: the request exceeded the server upload size limit ({0} MB)." — the file passed the browser-side check but the server rejected it.

If you hit either of these, the file itself is the problem, not the connection. Options:

  1. If the save is compressed (.gz, .zip, or an engine-specific packed format), unpack it first and upload the inner file.
  2. If the game keeps multiple save slots, upload a single slot rather than a combined archive.
  3. If the save is genuinely too large to fit, there is no workaround on the site side — you'd need to edit it with a desktop tool instead.

Move the file to a trusted local folder

This is the most common fix and the one people skip. Two error messages point directly at it:

  • "The browser could not read this file from its current folder. Move the file to a trusted local folder such as Downloads or Documents, then try again."
  • "Upload failed (400). The browser may not have sent the selected file correctly. Move the file to a trusted local folder such as Downloads or Documents, then try again."

Browsers restrict file access in certain locations — cloud-synced folders, network drives, temporary directories, and sandboxed app data folders are frequent offenders. Copy the save to Downloads or Documents on your local disk, then select it again from there. This resolves the 400 error in most cases.

Use Upload file instead of Paste code for binary data

The Paste code box is only for data that is safe to paste as plain text — Base64 strings or save codes that look like readable characters, for example:

%7B%22kind%22%3A%22save%22%2C%22data%22
1uy+UfyS+cNvDN5/3Lh2h1TqpmMIMZgEAAAAA=
BBF02F165FCD2FC1793F0FBE7E25B74FAB7FF0F

If your data looks like raw binary or garbled text — something like TÝnÓ0.../0ÖV...tpk1öiç-ñ... — do not paste it. Switch to Upload file and select the actual save file. Pasting binary into a text box corrupts it before it ever reaches the server.

Two related errors:

  • "Paste your Base64 or save code first." — the box was empty when you submitted.
  • "Paste code is not supported in this browser. Please use Upload file instead." — your browser can't handle the paste flow; use the upload button.

Note that pasted text is uploaded as savegame.txt, so if you paste a code, expect the tool to treat it as a text-based save.

Retry if the site is updating or the connection dropped

Some failures are transient and need nothing more than a retry:

  • "Please wait. The site is being updated. Updates usually take less than one minute. Please try again in a minute."
  • "Upload failed. The file may be invalid, the connection may have been interrupted, or the server-side upload size limit may have been exceeded."
  • "Upload check failed. The connection may have been interrupted."
  • "Unexpected upload check response."

Wait a minute and try again. If the same message repeats, the file is more likely the issue than the network — go back to the size and folder checks.

Quick reference

Error Likely cause Fix
File is too large / exceeded server upload size limit File over the max size Unpack compressed saves, upload a single slot, or use a desktop tool
Browser could not read this file / Upload failed (400) File in a restricted folder Move to Downloads or Documents and reselect
Paste code not supported / paste errors Binary data in the Paste code box Use Upload file instead
Site is being updated / connection interrupted Transient server or network issue Wait a minute and retry

Before you start editing

Once the upload succeeds, the tool auto-detects the format and opens the matching editor. Make your changes, then click Download to save the updated file. Back up your original save before editing — the site itself recommends it, and it's the only way to recover if an edit goes wrong.
