What Types of Artworks Can You Find on SuperRare?
Updated
SuperRare is a curated marketplace for digital and physical art, and the works listed there fall into a handful of distinct categories: Digital 1/1s, Digital Editions, Liquid Editions, and Digital + Physical pieces. Knowing which category a work belongs to tells you how many copies exist, whether there's a physical object involved, and how the work is sold — which is usually the first thing a collector needs to decide before bidding or buying.
The four main artwork categories
Digital 1/1s
A Digital 1/1 is a unique, single-edition digital artwork. Only one copy of the work exists on-chain, so owning it means owning the only version of that piece. These are typically the highest-profile listings on the platform and are often sold through auctions.
Digital Editions
Digital Editions are digital works released in multiple copies rather than as a single unique piece. Instead of one owner, several collectors can hold a copy of the same artwork. This makes them a more accessible entry point than 1/1s while still being verifiable digital works.
Liquid Editions
Liquid Editions are a distinct listing format on SuperRare, separate from standard editions. They appear as their own section on the marketplace and function differently from a fixed-supply edition drop, so if you're browsing, treat them as their own category rather than assuming they behave like a normal edition.
Digital + Physical
Digital + Physical works include a physical counterpart alongside the digital artwork. The listing pairs the on-chain piece with a real-world object, so the collector ends up with both. This category sits at the intersection of the platform's digital focus and traditional physical collecting.
How the categories compare
| Category | Copies | Physical counterpart | Typical sale format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digital 1/1s | One (unique) | No | Auctions, fixed-price listings |
| Digital Editions | Multiple | No | Editions releases |
| Liquid Editions | Distinct format | No | Liquid Editions listings |
| Digital + Physical | Varies | Yes | Auctions, fixed-price listings |
How to tell which category you're looking at
SuperRare organizes the marketplace around these categories, so the fastest way to identify a work's type is to browse by section rather than by individual listing:
- Open the marketplace and look at the category sections — Digital 1/1s, Digital Editions, Liquid Editions, and Digital + Physical each have their own area.
- Check the Auctions section for works currently being auctioned, and the Drop Calendar for upcoming releases.
- Use Recent sales and the Collectors / Artists views to see what has actually changed hands in the past 7 days, which helps confirm how a given category behaves in practice.
The expected result is that you can place any listing into one of the four categories before you commit to bidding or buying.
Common sticking points
- Assuming all editions are the same. Liquid Editions are a separate format from Digital Editions, so don't treat them interchangeably when comparing supply or price.
- Missing the physical component. A Digital + Physical work includes a real object; if you only want the digital file, this category may not be what you're after.
- Confusing 1/1s with editions. A 1/1 has exactly one copy. If a listing has multiple copies, it belongs to an edition category, not the 1/1 group.
If your goal is uniqueness, look at Digital 1/1s. If you want a lower-commitment entry into a curated work, Digital Editions are the relevant category. If you want something you can also hold, filter for Digital + Physical.
