What Visitors Can Find on the Last Edition Beetle Website
Updated
The Last Edition Beetle site (lasteditionbeetle.org) is the online home of the Last Edition Beetle Register, a group of owners and enthusiasts of the final 600 Volkswagen Beetles built in Germany for the UK market. It has been collecting information on these cars since the early 1990s and is mainly a reference and record-keeping resource: history, specifications, documents, registration tracking, and occasional event news. If you own one of these cars, are researching one, or want to know whether a car you have seen counts as a Last Edition, this is the place to start.
Main sections of the site
The navigation reflects the site's focus on documentation rather than sales or general Beetle content:
- About – background on the register and the club.
- History – the story of the Last Edition cars.
- Specification – details of how these vehicles were built and equipped.
- Documents – reference material relating to the cars.
- Tax and MOT – practical information for keeping one of these cars on the road in the UK.
- Miscellany – assorted additional material that does not fit the other categories.
- Silverfish – a section connected to the silver cars that originally defined the club.
- LEB Register – the record of known Last Edition Beetles.
- LEB Locator – a way of tracking where cars are.
- Events – get-togethers organised for members at VW club meetings around the UK.
- Restoration – material for owners bringing a car back to condition.
- Press – media coverage.
- Links – related external resources.
- Contact – how to get in touch, plus general registration information.
The Register and the Locator
These two sections are the core of the site's purpose. The register exists to keep track of as many of the cars as possible, and the locator helps establish where surviving examples are. Because the club has been gathering this information since the early 1990s, the records stretch back further than most single-model enthusiast sites. If your goal is to check whether a particular car is known to the register, or to add your own car to it, these are the pages to use.
What counts as a Last Edition Beetle
This is the question the site spends the most effort answering, because the definition is genuinely muddled.
The cars the site celebrates are the last 600 Volkswagen Beetles manufactured in Germany for sale in the United Kingdom. Of these:
- 300 were silver, and these were the cars VW designated as Last Edition models. They carried individually numbered plaques marking their place in the final limited set.
- Another 300 were built in four colour options: Riyadh Yellow, Mars Red, Miami Blue and Alpine White.
- Some official showroom marketing materials referred to the whole group as "the last gallant 600".
The numbering scheme did not go smoothly. According to the site, the numbering was very badly administered, with most plaques supplied separately from the cars, and many never reached their intended recipients. That is worth knowing if you are trying to verify a car by its plaque number.
Historically, club membership was restricted to the 300 silver Beetles. In 2025 the register changed its membership policy and opened its door to the non-silver Last Edition Beetles as well.
What the site is not about
The site is explicit that it covers the German-built cars, not the later Mexican ones. In 2003 Volkswagen announced a further 3,000 "Last Edition" Beetles to mark the end of production in Puebla, Mexico, the last factory building the cars anywhere in the world. Those Mexican cars were actually named Última Edición in Spanish, anglicised variously as "Final Edition" and "Ultimate Edition" — but "Last Edition" is the translation that stuck, which is why people researching the Mexican cars sometimes end up here. Most enthusiasts now use the correct Spanish title for those cars, so if that is what you are looking for, this register is not the right source.
Practical notes for visitors
- Events are occasional rather than a fixed calendar; the site points to its Facebook page for current plans.
- Contact and general registration are the routes for joining, adding a car to the register, or asking about a specific vehicle.
- Tax and MOT is the section to check first if your interest is keeping a car road-legal in the UK rather than historical research.
In short: use this site to identify and record German-built Last Edition Beetles, to research their history and specification, and to find restoration and ownership information. Use it with the understanding that "Last Edition" is an ambiguous term, and that the register's own definition — the final 600 German cars for the UK — is the one the site is built around.
