What Was Peter Rojas's Role at Betaworks Ventures?
Updated
Peter Rojas was a partner at Betaworks Ventures, joining as the third partner in a new fund created by John Borthwick and Matt Hartman. He held that role for just over six years, from around 2015 until his departure in August 2021.
How He Joined
According to his own account on roj.as, John Borthwick and Matt Hartman asked Rojas to become the third partner in a fund they were building out of Betaworks. He described accepting as "one of the best decisions I've ever made." His relationship with Borthwick predates the fund by nearly two decades — he calls Borthwick a trusted confidant and mentor.
What the Role Involved
Rojas worked as an investor. In his departure post, he framed the work as:
- Sourcing and digging into deals alongside Borthwick, Hartman, and the wider team
- Debating which technologies would shape how people live, work, and play online
- Supporting the founders the fund backed
He said he "loved working as an investor" and was "really proud" of what the team accomplished at Betaworks Ventures.
Why He Left
Rojas left in August 2021 — his last day was the Friday before his August 2 post. His stated reason was straightforward: it "felt like it was time for a new challenge." He notified the partners a few weeks before making it public.
A secondary factor appears in the same post: Covid had ended his regular trips to the New York office for roughly a year and a half, and he was sad to leave without having seen colleagues in person during that stretch.
What Came Next
Rojas moved on to Mozilla. In an April 2026 update on the same site, he noted he had been with Mozilla for about a year, leading their New Products organization. So the Betaworks chapter closed in 2021 and was followed by a return to product work rather than another investing role.
