What Wines Does Willespie Estate Produce?

Updated

Willespie Estate makes dry-grown, estate-bottled wines on site in Wilyabrup, Margaret River, spanning white, rosé, red, and fortified styles. Its range includes the Wilyabrup Reserve tier plus everyday whites such as Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, Verdelho, and Rosé, alongside Cabernet Franc and a fortified Shiraz. The wines are made from estate fruit and produced at the winery, which has operated in Wilyabrup since 1976.

The two tiers

Willespie's range is easiest to understand as two levels:

  • Wilyabrup Reserve — a flagship, single-site range positioned as "a place of its own." The Semillon 2025 is listed at $55.00.
  • Core estate wines — the broader, more accessibly priced range covering the main white, rosé, and red styles.

Both tiers share the same production approach: dry-grown fruit, made on site.

White wines

The white lineup covers the classic Margaret River varieties:

Wine Vintage shown Price
Wilyabrup Reserve Semillon 2025 $55.00
Sauvignon Blanc 2025 $25.00
Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2023 $28.00
Verdelho 2022 $28.00

Semillon appears at both ends of the range — as a Reserve flagship and as part of the Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blend. Verdelho is the less common variety here and worth noting if you want something beyond the region's standard white lineup.

Rosé and red wines

  • Rosé 2024 — $28.00, part of the current core range.
  • Cabernet Franc — listed with vintages 2009, 2014, and 2019, showing it is a recurring estate release rather than a one-off.
  • Black Jewel Fortified Shiraz — a fortified red, the sweetest and strongest style in the range.

Cabernet Franc as a standalone bottling is a distinguishing feature; many Margaret River producers use it mainly in blends.

What shapes the style

Two production facts apply across the range:

  • Dry-grown — the vines are farmed without irrigation, which typically concentrates fruit and yields smaller crops.
  • Made on site — the wines are produced at the Wilyabrup winery rather than at a contract facility, so the estate controls the whole process from vineyard to bottle.

The site has been in Wilyabrup, Margaret River, since 1976, and the winery describes a new chapter underway after 50 years — new cellar door experiences, with the wines still dry-grown and made on site.

Seeing the range in person

The cellar door is open daily from 10:30am to 5pm, where the wines can be tasted before buying. The estate also hosts a Flying Machine Museum collection, so a visit covers more than the tasting room. If you want to compare the Reserve Semillon against the core whites, or try the Cabernet Franc across vintages, the cellar door is the practical way to do it.
