When and How to Join the Scarborough Amateur Radio Club Nets
Updated
The Scarborough Amateur Radio Club (VE3WE) holds two weekly on-air Nets on the VE3TOR repeater at 146.940 MHz: Thursdays at 7:30 PM and Sundays at 10:30 AM. To join, tune your radio to that frequency at the scheduled time and check in when net control—operating under the club call sign VE3WE—invites participants. You do not need to be a club member to take part.
Net Schedule at a Glance
| Day | Time | Repeater | Frequency | Net Control Call Sign |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thursday | 7:30 PM | VE3TOR | 146.940 | VE3WE |
| Sunday | 10:30 AM | VE3TOR | 146.940 | VE3WE |
Times are as listed by the club; confirm before your first check-in in case of seasonal or holiday changes.
How to Check In: Step by Step
- Confirm the schedule. Visit the club's Events page or join the mailing list for any updates to Net times or repeater details.
- Set your radio. Program 146.940 MHz with the offset and tone required by the VE3TOR repeater (standard repeater settings for your area; check with local operators or the club if unsure).
- Listen first. At the start of the Net, net control (VE3WE) will call the Net to order and explain the check-in procedure.
- Check in when invited. Wait for net control to ask for check-ins, then transmit your call sign clearly and briefly. Follow any instructions net control gives.
- Participate. Once checked in, you can take part in the round of introductions, announcements, and any discussion topics.
Expected result: You are acknowledged by net control and included in the Net roster for that session.
Who Can Join
- Licensed radio amateurs in Scarborough, the eastern part of Toronto, and surrounding areas—or anyone within range of the repeater.
- Non-members are welcome. Club membership is not required to participate on the mailing list or, by extension, to check in to the Nets. Membership is described as a way to support club activities.
Common Snags
- Can't hear the Net: You may be outside repeater range or missing the correct offset/tone. Try a better antenna position or verify repeater settings with a local operator.
- Unsure of the schedule: The club notes that details can change—check Events and the mailing list rather than relying on memory.
- New to Nets: Listen to a full session before checking in; the format becomes clear quickly, and net control will guide you.
Staying Informed
The club holds regular meetings both in person and online, and maintains a mailing list open to non-members for event and project updates. For schedule details, the Events page and mailing list are the club's stated sources of truth.
