What Happens at a Meeting
A typical meeting is more than a lecture. According to the society's own description, the evening can include:
- A guest speaker — most meetings feature a top guest speaker, and the society draws on the best local knowledge from its more experienced members.
- Library access — members can borrow books, but only books ordered via the website will be available for collection. To borrow, log into the website and click on the library tab to view the catalogue.
- Supper — if you have fruit or baked goods using fruit from your garden that you would like to share, bring them cut up and labelled.
- Trading tables — available at nearly every meeting, where members may purchase fruit trees, rootstocks, budwood, grafting material and unusual plants for a modest outlay. Books, grafting tools, tapes and sharpeners are also available.
- A digital newsletter — sent prior to each meeting, containing articles and experiences from other members, usually including an outline of the previous guest speaker's presentation or a description of a prior field trip or seminar.
Before You Go
- If you are feeling unwell, please do not attend the meeting. This is stated directly on the society's site.
- Check the current meeting notice. The date above (24th November 2026) is the one listed on the website at the time of writing; meeting schedules can change, so confirm the next date before travelling.
- Membership matters for some activities. Library borrowing and the members area require a login, so if you plan to borrow books, sort out your membership and website access beforehand.
Why Attend
The society grows fruits and food plants from cool-temperate, temperate, subtropical and elevated tropical regions, and keeps records of its successes and failures. Meetings are where that knowledge is shared: you can learn to graft, bud and propagate at workshop sessions, hear from guest speakers, join field trips to established fruit properties, research stations and member orchards, and tap into a large collection of rare and heritage variety fruit trees — including a heritage fruit tree orchard at Kanmantoo established with Neutrog Ltd.
