When Is Holy Communion Offered at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church?

Updated

Holy Communion is offered during the 8:15am and 10:45am Sunday Divine Worship on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month, and at every Monday Evening Service (6:30pm). On the 2nd, 4th, and 5th Sundays of the month, Communion is instead offered at noon with a short spoken order of service. If you are a visitor, the church practices Closed Communion and asks that you speak with one of the pastors before communing.

Communion Schedule at a Glance

Service Day / Time Communion Offered
Sunday Divine Worship Sunday, 8:15am & 10:45am 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month
Monday Evening Service Monday, 6:30pm Every Monday
Noon service (short spoken order) Sunday, noon 2nd, 4th, and 5th Sundays of the month

The pattern to remember: on the 1st and 3rd Sundays, Communion is part of the main morning worship. On the 2nd, 4th, and 5th Sundays, it moves to a separate noon service with a shorter spoken liturgy.

What Visitors Should Know Before Communing

Mount Olive participates in what it describes as the biblical, historic, loving practice of Closed Communion. In practice, this means:

  • Communion is not open to everyone attending the service.
  • Visitors are asked to speak with one of the pastors before communing.
  • The church frames this as a request to respect its Communion practice.

If you are new and planning to attend a service where Communion is offered, the practical step is to arrive early enough to find a pastor and have that conversation beforehand, rather than deciding at the rail.

Planning Your Visit Around the Schedule

  • Want to commune on a Sunday morning? Target the 1st or 3rd Sunday and attend either the 8:15am or 10:45am service.
  • Prefer an evening service? The Monday 6:30pm service includes Communion every week.
  • Attending on a 2nd, 4th, or 5th Sunday? Communion is at noon, not during the morning services, and uses a short spoken order of service.
  • First time at Mount Olive? The site points new visitors to an "I'm New!" section and the weekly bulletin, which is worth checking for any changes to the service order.

Other Ways to Follow Along

For those who cannot attend in person, Sunday morning early service (8:15am) and other special services are live-streamed, and video bulletins plus a service and sermon archive are available online. Pastors Ulrich and Soule also host the Mount of Olives Podcast for sermon listening between services.
