When to Use Paste Code Instead of Upload File in Save Editor

Updated

Use Paste code when your save data is already plain, copyable text — a Base64 string, a URL-encoded save code, or a hex string. Use Upload file for everything else, especially raw binary or garbled data. If you're unsure, upload the file: the tool detects the format automatically and opens the right editor.

The rule that decides it

Save Editor's own guidance draws the line at whether the data survives being copied and pasted as normal text:

  • Paste code — the data is readable text you can select and copy (Base64, save codes, hex).
  • Upload file — the data is raw binary or garbled text that would break or lose bytes if pasted.

The site gives these as examples of paste-safe data:

  • %7B%22kind%22%3A%22save%22%2C%22data%22 (URL-encoded JSON)
  • 1uy+UfyS+cNvDN5/3Lh2h1TqpmMIMZgEAAAAA=
  • BBF02F165FCD2FC1793F0FBE7E25B74FAB7FF0F

And this as an example of data that should not be pasted:

  • TÝnÓ0.../0ÖV...tpk1öiç-ñ...

That last string contains non-printable and accented characters — a sign the underlying file is binary. Pasting it risks dropped or altered bytes, so upload the file instead.

How to decide in practice

Your data looks like… Use Why
Base64 (1uy+UfyS...=) Paste code Plain text, copy-safe
URL-encoded JSON (%7B%22kind%22...) Paste code Plain text, copy-safe
Hex string (BBF02F16...) Paste code Plain text, copy-safe
Garbled symbols, accents, control characters Upload file Likely binary; pasting corrupts it
A .save, .sav, .rmmzsave, .rpgsave, .sqlite, .sol, .gz, .es3, .dat file on disk Upload file Tool auto-detects the format

What happens after you paste

  1. Paste your Base64 or save code into the Paste code box.
  2. Click Submit.
  3. The pasted text is uploaded as savegame.txt, and the tool detects the format and opens the best editor.
  4. Make your changes, then click Download to save the updated file.

Back up your save before editing.

Common snags

  • Empty paste box — you'll see "Paste your Base64 or save code first." Paste something before submitting.
  • Browser doesn't support pasting — you'll get "Paste code is not supported in this browser. Please use Upload file instead." Switch to uploading.
  • You pasted binary by mistake — if the editor shows garbled or broken values, cancel and upload the original file instead.

Quick takeaway

Paste code is the faster path only when your save is already clean text (Base64, save code, hex). For binary files, compressed saves, or anything that looks garbled, upload the file and let Save Editor detect the format.
