Where and when does Bottisham Swimming Club train?

Updated

Bottisham Swimming Club (BSC) trains at two venues: Bottisham Swimming Pool on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and Impington Sports Centre on Sunday afternoons. The A squad has an additional session at Impington on Monday evenings. Which sessions your swimmer attends depends on their squad, so the days above describe the club's overall training pattern rather than a single timetable for every member.

Training venues and days

Venue Days
Bottisham Swimming Pool Wednesdays and Thursdays
Impington Sports Centre Sunday afternoons
Impington Sports Centre Monday evenings (A squad only)

The club describes itself as operating to the north and east of Cambridge, which fits both locations. If you are weighing up travel and lift-sharing, the split between a midweek pool and a weekend sports centre is the main practical factor to plan around.

How squads relate to training

BSC runs a progression of squads rather than one group for everyone:

  • Academy Squad – the usual starting point for new young swimmers.
  • C squad, then B squad, then A squad – swimmers typically move up over a number of years.
  • A squad – around ages 12 to 19, for swimmers who are fully committed and compete regularly. This is the group with the extra Monday evening session at Impington.

Many members stay with the club until they leave college or go to university, so the squad you join shapes both your training days and your long-term path through the club.

What this means for joining

The club trains young swimmers from about age 8, generally once they have reached around Level 7 or 8 in their swimming lessons. It also accepts competent junior club swimmers up to age 18 into the B and A squads, subject to space being available.

Because training days differ by squad, the exact schedule for your child is confirmed once they are placed. The club runs trials for swimmers aged 8 and above three times a year, and a trial request form is the route in — the Membership Secretary or Head Coach then makes contact when a trial space becomes available.

Practical points to check before committing

  • Confirm your squad's days. The Wednesday/Thursday, Sunday and Monday pattern is club-wide; your swimmer's actual sessions follow their squad placement.
  • Ask about space in B and A. Entry to these squads for experienced junior club swimmers depends on availability, so raise it early.
  • Plan around two sites. Midweek training and Sunday training happen at different venues, which affects travel and family logistics.
  • Expect commitment. The club states it expects hard work, commitment and good behaviour in the pool, and A squad swimmers compete regularly.

For current timings, pool updates and any changes, the club's weekly news page is the place to watch, since session details can shift.
