Where Did the RocketTheme Team Go After June 30, 2025?
Updated
RocketTheme closed on June 30, 2025, but the team and founder kept building. If you came looking for the people behind the themes, they now run five separate projects: Trilby Media (the studio itself, offering Grav consulting, custom development, managed hosting, and the official Grav SLA), Grav CMS (the flat-file CMS that started at RocketTheme in 2014, now at Grav 2.0), KahunaCart (ecommerce built into Grav), SkulkWorks (native Mac apps), and YetiDevWorks (open-source Rust and PHP developer tools). The old RocketTheme templates and Gantry framework also survive as free, open-source archives — but those are maintained by a different steward, not the original team.
What happened to RocketTheme itself
RocketTheme ran for twenty years, from 2005 to 2025, building premium themes and extensions for Joomla, WordPress, phpBB, and Grav, plus the Gantry theme framework that powered them. On June 30, 2025, the mission officially concluded. The membership club, member downloads, and support forum closed with the site, and no new memberships or renewals are available.
What remains from the original company is the open-source archive: free Gantry themes, RocketLauncher installers, and developer tooling on GitHub, plus the Gantry framework itself. Gantry is now stewarded by Tiger12 and is still actively maintained — so if your question is specifically whether Gantry still gets updates, the answer is yes, just under new ownership rather than RocketTheme.
Where the team went: the five current projects
The founder and team moved on to these ventures. Each serves a different need, so pick based on what you actually want.
| Project | What it is | Best for | Link |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trilby Media | The studio behind RocketTheme; Grav CMS consulting, custom development, managed hosting, and the only official Grav SLA | Hiring the team for Grav work or managed hosting | trilby.media |
| Grav CMS | Open-source flat-file CMS started at RocketTheme in 2014; no database, fast out of the box, now shipping Grav 2.0 | Building a site without a database | getgrav.org |
| KahunaCart | Serious ecommerce built directly into Grav; products, orders, and customers stay in your own database, on your own server, licensed once | Selling products on a Grav site you control | kahunacart.com |
| SkulkWorks | Native Mac apps from RocketTheme's founder, including Riffle (diff & merge) and RasterFox (image optimization); no subscriptions | Mac users wanting focused design/web utilities | skulkworks.dev |
| YetiDevWorks | Open-source developer tools and experiments in Rust and PHP, by the same hands | Developers wanting open-source tooling | yetidevworks.com |
Trilby Media — if you want the original team
Trilby Media is the studio behind RocketTheme and is still operating. It handles Grav CMS consulting, custom development, and managed hosting, and it offers the only official Grav SLA. Choose this if you want continuity with the people who built the original themes, or if you need a support guarantee for a Grav deployment.
Grav CMS — if you want the CMS that started here
Grav began at RocketTheme in 2014 and is now an independent open-source project at Grav 2.0. It's a flat-file CMS: no database, fast out of the box. Choose it if you want a lightweight CMS and don't want to run a database. Note that Grav's ongoing development is separate from Trilby Media's commercial services — the CMS is open source, while consulting and hosting come from the studio.
KahunaCart — if you need ecommerce on Grav
KahunaCart builds ecommerce directly into Grav. Products, orders, and customers stay in your own database, on your own server, and it's licensed once rather than by subscription. Choose it if you're already on Grav and want to keep customer data under your own control instead of on a hosted platform.
SkulkWorks and YetiDevWorks — if you want tools, not sites
SkulkWorks makes native Mac apps from RocketTheme's founder — fast, focused utilities like Riffle for diff and merge and RasterFox for image optimization, with no subscriptions. YetiDevWorks publishes open-source developer tools and experiments in Rust and PHP. Choose SkulkWorks for Mac desktop utilities and YetiDevWorks if you want to read, use, or contribute to open-source code.
How to decide
- You want the original team's help on a Grav project → Trilby Media.
- You want a free, open-source CMS to build on → Grav CMS.
- You're selling products and want your own database → KahunaCart.
- You want Mac utilities for design or web work → SkulkWorks.
- You want open-source developer tooling → YetiDevWorks.
- You want the old RocketTheme templates or Gantry → the GitHub archive and gantry.org, not the team's new projects.
