Where to Download Aleph One and Find Its Community Resources
Updated
Aleph One is the open-source continuation of Bungie's Marathon 2 engine, and the official hub at alephone.lhowon.org is where you get the engine, the latest release, and the links to its community. The current release listed on the site is 1.11.1 (2026-09-30), and the engine runs on macOS, Windows, and Linux. From the same page you can reach the source code, the GitHub Wiki, the iOS and Steam listings, the Discord, and the Patreon. If you want to play the Marathon trilogy or community scenarios, start here and follow the download link for your platform.
What you can get from alephone.lhowon.org
The site is the project's main landing page, hosted by lhowon.org and mirrored at aleph-one-marathon.github.io. Its stated purpose is to distribute the engine and point you to everything built around it.
| Resource | What it gives you |
|---|---|
| Engine download | Aleph One for macOS, Windows, and Linux |
| Source code | The codebase, released under the GNU General Public License (GPL) |
| GitHub Wiki | Documentation and project reference |
| iOS / Steam | Additional platform listings linked from the site |
| Discord | Community chat and coordination |
| Patreon | Optional support for the project |
| Global matchmaking lobby | Finding and chatting with other players |
The site also links to marathonthegame.com for information about Bungie's upcoming Marathon game — that is a separate commercial title, not the open-source engine.
Which Marathon games the engine supports
Aleph One supports the Marathon trilogy natively, so you do not need separate engines for each entry:
- Marathon — a fight for survival against the Pfhor, an alien race attacking your colony ship; the starting point for story-focused players.
- Marathon 2: Durandal — you and other survivors hunt for an ancient ally to topple the Pfhor empire; noted on the site for its popular single-player campaign and updated graphics from the XBLA remake.
- Marathon Infinity — you rewrite history to prevent the destruction of the universe; the site notes that most multiplayer online matches are played with Infinity.
Beyond the trilogy, the engine powers dozens of community-made games, from new levels to total conversions with new weapons, monsters, and storylines set inside and outside the Marathon universe. The site points to a list of major scenarios you can download and play with the engine.
How to get playing
- Download the engine for your platform from alephone.lhowon.org. The site lists macOS, Windows, and Linux builds.
- Get game data. The engine is the runtime; you still need the Marathon game files or a community scenario to play. The scenarios page linked from the site is the place to browse community content.
- For single player, pick a scenario and launch it through the engine. Marathon 2 is the common recommendation for its campaign.
- For multiplayer, join the global matchmaking lobby to find and chat with other players. Matches support up to 8 players in competitive or co-op play, and all games are peer-to-peer over a LAN or, if the host is configured properly, over the Internet.
- Optional account. Signing up for an lhowon.org account lets you track your play history and compete on the monthly leaderboards. This is optional, not required to play.
Community entry points in one place
- Discord — the fastest route to other players and scenario authors.
- GitHub Wiki — reference material and project documentation.
- Global matchmaking lobby — built into the multiplayer flow for finding games.
- lhowon.org account — play history and monthly leaderboards, if you want them.
- Patreon — if you want to support ongoing development.
The site does not state pricing for the engine itself; it is distributed under the GPL, and the linked platform listings (iOS, Steam) and Patreon are separate destinations you should check individually for their own terms.
