Where to Find Berkeley Linguistics Research Resources and Publications
Updated
The UC Berkeley Department of Linguistics site (lx.berkeley.edu) gathers its research output in a few distinct places: Publications (dissertations, honors theses, working papers, annual reports, and survey reports), Corpora and Archival Collections, and the Berkeley Linguistics Society pages. Use the Publications section for written scholarship, the Corpora section for data and archival material, and the BLS pages for conference proceedings and society materials. All of these are reachable from the department's main navigation.
Publications: Dissertations, Theses, and Working Papers
The Publications area is the starting point for most research needs. It is organized into separate listings:
- Dissertations — completed PhD dissertations from the department.
- Honors Theses — undergraduate honors work.
- Berkeley Papers in Formal Linguistics — the department's formal linguistics working paper series.
- PhonLab Annual Reports — yearly reports from the Phonetics Laboratory.
- Survey Reports — report series listed alongside the other publication types.
If you know the author or year, go straight to the matching list rather than browsing. For recent PhD graduates, the Recent PhD Alumni page under People can help you confirm names before searching the dissertation list.
A practical search order
- Check Dissertations or Honors Theses if you are looking for a specific student's work.
- Check Berkeley Papers in Formal Linguistics for theoretical work that may not have appeared in a journal.
- Check PhonLab Annual Reports for experimental phonetics data and lab findings.
- Check Survey Reports for the department's survey-based research series.
Corpora and Archival Collections
The Corpora and Archival Collections page is the entry point for linguistic data rather than written papers. This is where you should look if your task involves:
- Analyzing language data rather than reading an argument.
- Finding archival recordings or collections tied to departmental research.
- Locating corpora referenced in dissertations or working papers.
For example, if a dissertation cites a departmental corpus, check this page first for access details before contacting individual researchers.
Berkeley Linguistics Society Materials
The Berkeley Linguistics Society (BLS) is listed separately from the Publications section. BLS materials — including its conference proceedings — are the place to look for peer-reviewed conference papers rather than departmental working papers. If your citation is to a BLS proceedings volume, start at the BLS pages, not the Publications list.

Common Stumbling Points
- Publications and Corpora are separate sections. A paper and the data behind it usually live in different places; check both.
- BLS is not under Publications. Conference proceedings are managed through the society's own pages.
- Some material may require library access. The site does not state that all publications are open access, so if a link does not resolve, try the UC Berkeley Library or contact the department directly.
- Events and news are not archives. The News (Calques) and Upcoming Events sections announce activity; they are not where you find papers.
For anything not listed — such as access to a specific archival collection — the Contact Info and Directions page and the department's general contact are the appropriate next step.
