Where to Find CMS Building Plans and Site Layout Downloads
Updated
The Centre for Mathematical Sciences (CMS) website at cms.cam.ac.uk hosts its building plans and layout documents under the Planning section of the site. From the main index, follow the "Planning" link, then use the "Plans - downloads" page to reach downloadable drawings. Three plan-related entries are listed there: Basements and Ground Floor, Plans - downloads, and Site Plan. The same Planning area also links to an Office layout reference and an Approved Plans and Timetable page.
Main entry points
| What you need | Where to look on cms.cam.ac.uk |
|---|---|
| Downloadable plan files | Planning → Plans - downloads |
| Basement and ground floor drawings | Planning → Basements and Ground Floor |
| Overall site layout | Planning → Site Plan |
| Office layout reference | Planning → Office layout |
| Approval status and schedule | Planning → Approved Plans and Timetable |
How to get there
- Open cms.cam.ac.uk.
- Select Planning from the site navigation.
- Choose the page that matches your need:
- For files you can save, open Plans - downloads.
- For floor-level drawings, open Basements and Ground Floor.
- For the site-wide arrangement, open Site Plan.
- On the downloads page, select the plan file you want and save it locally.
Expected result: you land on a page listing the plan documents, with links to the individual drawings or files.
What else the Planning section covers
The Planning area is broader than plans alone. It also includes:
- History and background – extracts from the 1997 feasibility study by Edward Cullinan Architects, plus planning requirements and suggestions.
- Design – environmental design parts I and II, surrounding architectural character, and views "from within" and "from without".
- Construction record – different phases, approved plans and timetable, construction news, and aerial photographs of the building site from 1999.
- Buildings and phases – the Betty and Gordon Moore Library, the Faulkes Institute for Geometry, the Marit and Hans Rausing pavilion (Pavilions A, C and D), the Faulkes Gatehouse, and phase two.
- Funding – funding and phasing, major benefactors, and press releases from 1996 and 1997.
Common snags
- Wrong section: plan material sits under Planning, not under About or Contacts. If you start from the homepage, go straight to Planning.
- Download vs. view: the "Plans - downloads" page is the place for files; the "Site Plan" and "Basements and Ground Floor" pages are better for quick reference.
- Historical vs. current: some drawings and photographs document the original 1990s construction. Check the page title (for example, "Approved Plans and Timetable") if you need the approved version rather than a historical sketch.
For general enquiries after finding the plans, the site's Contacts page is the next stop.
