Where to Find IDA Documentation, Training, and Community Support

Updated

Hex-Rays hosts all four on hex-rays.com: Documentation for user guides and technical references, IDA Training Courses for structured instruction, the Forum for community Q&A, and the Blog plus GitHub Projects for updates and open-source code. Start with Documentation if you need to look something up, Training if you need to learn the tool systematically, and the Forum if you're stuck on a specific problem.

Official documentation

The Documentation section is the reference layer — comprehensive user guides and technical documentation for IDA and the surrounding toolchain. Use it when you already know what you're looking for: a specific dialog, a scripting API, a loader or processor module detail.

It's less useful as a first introduction to reverse engineering itself. For that, the training path below is a better entry point.

Training courses

Hex-Rays lists IDA Training Courses described as expert-level courses for mastering complex reverse engineering techniques. The site also surfaces IDA Pro Starter Training – On Demand, which suggests a self-paced option aimed at people new to IDA Pro rather than to reverse engineering as a whole.

Two things worth checking before you commit time or budget:

  • Whether a given course assumes prior assembly and debugging experience.
  • Whether it covers the decompiler specifically or only the disassembler workflow.

The site does not publish course prerequisites or syllabi in the material available here, so confirm those directly on the training pages.

Community support

The Forum is the place for questions and community support. It's the right channel for "why does IDA behave this way on this binary" problems where another user's experience is more likely to help than a manual page.

For open-source code rather than discussion, GitHub Projects collects official Hex-Rays open-source projects and the SDK — the starting point if you want to build your own processor modules, loaders, or plugins.

Staying current

The Blog carries insights, updates, and articles from the Hex-Rays team. This is where release news lands — the site currently highlights IDA release 9.4 — along with write-ups that are more narrative than reference material.

If you want to influence what ships next rather than just read about it, the site also lists a Beta Program for trying new features early.

Beyond the four core channels, hex-rays.com also hosts:

  • Plugins — community and third-party extensions that enhance IDA.
  • Add-ons — official extras including a Teams Add-on for collaborative reverse engineering and a Private Lumina Add-on for fast function recognition within an organization.
  • hcli — a command-line interface for managing IDA licenses, installations, and plugins, built for both interactive use and automated workflows.
  • IDA MCP — for driving IDA from an AI assistant over the Model Context Protocol.
  • Case studies — applied examples across malware analysis and digital forensics, vulnerability research and penetration testing, intellectual property, automotive security, and interoperability.

The case studies are worth reading before training if you're still deciding whether IDA fits your use case; they show the kinds of problems the tool is actually applied to rather than describing features in the abstract.
