Where to Find News, Blog Posts, and Presentations from the Society for Hungarian Philately

Updated

The Society for Hungarian Philately (SHP) publishes its news, blog posts, and expert presentations on its homepage at hungarianphilately.org, primarily through two sections: the Article & News Highlights area and the latest blog posts and presentations feed. Both are visible without logging in, but some linked content — notably journal archives and members-only blog posts — requires a Society membership login.

Start on the Homepage

The homepage is organized as a slider plus content blocks. The first slider panel, headed "See the Latest Club News and Presentations," is the main entry point for time-sensitive updates: philatelic articles, upcoming meetings and events, and expert presentations. Each panel pairs a short description with a READ MORE link that opens the full item, and a JOIN US link for membership information.

The same page also carries these related blocks:

  • Article & News Highlights — a list of current articles and reference material.
  • Our Latest Blog Posts and Presentations — dated posts from the Philately in Action series.
  • Publications — the Society's monograph series, reached via Read More.
  • Log In — members-only content, including SHP journal archives and members-only blog posts.

What the Article & News Highlights Section Contains

This section mixes original reference material with restricted items. Examples visible on the page include:

  • An English/Hungarian and Hungarian/English cross-reference of philatelic terms and pronunciation, plus a glossary of English–Hungarian terms.
  • A copyright excerpt from "The Hungarian Hyperinflation of 1945–1946" by Robert B. Morgan.
  • Entries marked "Restricted content," which are not readable without a member login.

If you are researching Hungarian philatelic vocabulary or the 1945–46 inflation period, this section is the place to start — but expect the deeper material to sit behind the login.

The Blog and Presentation Feed: Philately in Action

The numbered Philately in Action posts are the Society's ongoing article series, each dated and each with a READ MORE link. Two examples from the page show the level of detail:

Post Subject What it covers
Philately in Action #51.2 The "Magyar Tanácsköztársaság" overprint issue Both sides of an official post card from the treasury department of the City of Sopron, noting a voucher for 2 cubic metres of firewood valid 9–11 a.m. on July 26, 1919, and the card's correct franking
Philately in Action #52.4 The First Debreczen Issue of the Romanian occupation A newspaper and wrapper franked with a newspaper stamp from Plate I, cancelled November 24, 1919 at Debreczen 1, with the expertization mark of Mihály Bodor below the stamp

These posts are useful as worked examples: they show how a specific issue is identified, how postal stationery and cancellations are read, and how expertization marks are interpreted. The #52.4 entry also references Mihály Bodor's catalog of Hungarian material, which is a pointer for further reading rather than a substitute for it.

Presentations and Meeting News

Presentation announcements appear in the same slider and news areas rather than in a separate archive. The homepage text refers to "expert presentations" alongside upcoming meetings and events, so the practical approach is to check the slider panels and the Article & News Highlights list for the current item, then follow READ MORE. There is no indication on the page of a standalone events calendar or a video library.

What Requires a Login

The Log In block states that Society membership unlocks members-only content, specifically SHP journal archives and members-only blog content. The page does not describe membership pricing or whether any trial access exists, so treat the login as a membership benefit and request details through the JOIN US links if you need the archives.

A Practical Route

  1. Open hungarianphilately.org.
  2. Scan the slider for the current news or presentation panel and follow READ MORE.
  3. Scroll to Article & News Highlights for reference material and glossary content.
  4. Check Our Latest Blog Posts and Presentations for the newest numbered Philately in Action entries.
  5. If an item is marked restricted or you need journal archives, use Log In with a membership account — or JOIN US to ask about joining.

One caveat: the page shows a mix of dated posts and auction notices (for example, an auction listed as "NOW CLOSED TO BIDS"), so confirm dates on individual items before relying on them as current.
