Where to Find OSGeo Events, News, and Resources
Updated
OSGeo (osgeo.org) publishes community news, foundation press releases, a global events calendar, and downloadable learning resources on its own site. The fastest path is to use the top-level navigation: News, Events, and Resources each act as a separate hub, so you can go straight to the type of update you want instead of browsing project pages. The sections below describe what each hub contains, based on the site's current listings.
Community News and Foundation News
OSGeo splits news into two streams, which matters if you want project-level updates versus organizational announcements.
- Community news covers work by chapters, service providers, and research groups. Current examples include a post on world oil production and consumption mapping, a note about GeoSolutions at FOSS4G North America 2026 in Sacramento, and a technical write-up on GeoNode plus OpenID Connect for corporate authentication and group synchronization.
- Foundation news / press releases covers releases and awards. Recent items include the pgRouting 4.0.2 release, the 2026 Sol Katz Award going to Ian Turton, and the establishment of a European legal foundation for OSGeo.
Both streams offer a "View all" link, so you can scan the full archive rather than only the latest few entries. If your goal is to track a specific project's release cadence, the foundation news stream is the one to follow; if you want practical write-ups and event recaps, community news is more useful.
Events: FOSS4G and Regional Meetups
The events section lists both the annual flagship congress and smaller recurring gatherings.
| Event | Location / Date | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| FOSS4G 2026 | Hiroshima, Japan, August 2026 | Annual international congress |
| FOSS4G NA 2026 | Sacramento | North America regional edition, November 2nd |
| PostGIS Day 2026 | November 19th | Single-topic community day |
| Open Source Geospatial Slovenija #5 | October 14th | Local chapter event |
The site also points to a full events listing, which is where you should check for additions, date changes, or registration details. Note that the page shows event dates without pricing or registration status, so confirm those on the individual event pages before planning travel.
Learning Resources and Newsletters
The resources section collects longer-form and recurring material rather than one-off posts. The most visible example is the GeoForAll Newsletter, published monthly in multiple language versions — the September 2026 issue (Vol. 12, no. 09) appears in both English and Spanish, and the August 2026 issue (Vol. 12, no. 08) is also listed in Spanish. Each issue follows a consistent structure: an editorial, a "Laboratory of the Month" activity, and event listings.
This is the best entry point if you want ongoing educational content tied to the GeoForAll initiative rather than project release notes. A "View all resources" link leads to the full archive.
How to Choose Your Entry Point
- Tracking software releases and awards → Foundation news / press releases.
- Reading practical case studies and community write-ups → Community news.
- Planning to attend or submit to a conference → Events, then the FOSS4G 2026 Hiroshima page for the flagship.
- Following education and outreach material → Resources, starting with the GeoForAll Newsletter archive.
All four hubs are reachable from the osgeo.org homepage, and each has its own "View all" listing, so you can subscribe to one stream without wading through the others.
