Where to Get WhatFont for Chrome, Safari, iPhone, iPad, or Another Browser
Updated
WhatFont is free and available in four forms: a Chrome extension (also works in Edge, Arc, Brave, and other Chromium browsers), a Safari extension for Mac from the Mac App Store, an iPhone/iPad version used through Safari, and a bookmarklet for any other browser. Pick the one that matches your browser or device; all of them identify a font's name, size, weight, and color by pointing at text.
Chrome and other Chromium browsers
Install the Chrome extension from the WhatFont site using the "Get WhatFont Free" option. The site states it also works in Edge, Arc, Brave, and other Chromium browsers, so you can install it from the Chrome Web Store in those browsers too.
Steps:
- Open the WhatFont site and choose the Chrome option.
- Add the extension to your browser.
- Click the WhatFont button in your toolbar.
- Point at any text — the name, size, weight, and color appear.
- Click to pin the details, and press Esc when you're done.
Expected result: hovering over text shows its font details without leaving the page.
Safari on Mac
Safari users on Mac get WhatFont as a Safari extension from the Mac App Store. Install it there, then enable it in Safari's extension settings if Safari asks you to. Once active, the same point-and-click workflow applies.
iPhone and iPad
On iPhone and iPad, WhatFont works through Safari: select text in Safari, then tap WhatFont to see its font. There's no separate app-store install step described beyond this Safari-based flow, so the key requirement is using Safari as your browser.
Any other browser: the bookmarklet
If your browser isn't covered above, drag the bookmarklet button from the WhatFont site to your bookmarks bar, then click it on any page to activate font identification.
Caveat: some sites block bookmarklets, so the bookmarklet may not work everywhere. If it fails on a particular site, that's the likely cause rather than an installation error.
Which option should you choose?
| Your setup | Use this | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome, Edge, Arc, Brave, other Chromium | Chrome extension | Full toolbar-button workflow |
| Safari on Mac | Safari extension (Mac App Store) | Enable in Safari if prompted |
| iPhone or iPad | Safari + select text, tap WhatFont | Safari-based |
| Any other browser | Bookmarklet | Some sites block bookmarklets |
Common snags
- Nothing happens after clicking: make sure the extension is enabled in your browser's extension settings.
- Bookmarklet does nothing on a site: the site likely blocks bookmarklets; try a supported browser instead.
- Details stay on screen: click to pin them, then press Esc to dismiss.
All versions are described as free and work on every website, per the WhatFont site.
