Which Browser Interface Elements Can You Customize with Chrome Theme Studio?
Updated
Chrome Theme Studio lets you customize the main color elements of a Chromium browser's interface, including the toolbar, URL bar, tab text, and bookmark text, plus separate color sets for Active, Inactive, Incognito, and Inactive & Incognito window states. You change any color by clicking its colored box in the corresponding row, and the preview updates in real time. When you're satisfied, you click "Download Theme" to get the theme file.
Universal settings (apply across the browser)
These rows sit under the Universal heading and control elements that stay consistent regardless of window state:
- Toolbar — the main toolbar background
- Toolbar Button Icon — the icons on toolbar buttons
- URL Bar Text — the address bar's text color
- URL Bar Background — the address bar's background
- Tab Text — the label text on tabs
- Bookmark Text — the text of bookmarks in the bookmarks bar
Window-state groups
Below the universal rows, the tool splits colors into four state groups, each with its own frame and tab settings:
| State group | Elements you can color |
|---|---|
| Active | Frame background, tab background, tab text |
| Inactive | Frame background, tab background, tab text |
| Incognito | Frame background, tab background, tab text |
| Inactive & Incognito | Frame background, tab background, tab text |
This means a window that is inactive and in Incognito mode can look different from a plain inactive window or a plain Incognito window — useful if you want visual cues for each situation.
How the editing works
- Find the row for the element you want to change (for example, "URL Bar Background" under Universal, or "Tab Text" under Active).
- Click the colored box in that row.
- Pick a new color; the browser theme preview adjusts in real time.
- Repeat for any other elements.
- Click Download Theme at the top of the page to save your theme.
Practical notes
- The tool is aimed at Chromium-based browsers, including Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Brave, so one theme file can be reused across them.
- Because each state group has independent frame and tab colors, plan your palette as a set: pick universal colors first, then decide how Active, Inactive, Incognito, and Inactive & Incognito should differ.
- The page shows a live preview area (with sample bookmarks labeled "Bookmark 1" and "Bookmark 2") so you can judge contrast between tab text and tab background before downloading.
If your goal is simply to recolor the toolbar and address bar, the Universal rows are enough. If you want Incognito windows to be visually distinct, spend time on the Incognito and Inactive & Incognito groups as well.
