Which Counties and Districts Are Served by Old North State Council?
Updated
Old North State Council (ONSC), a local council of Scouting America, serves eight counties in and around the greater Greensboro area of North Carolina: Rockingham, Caswell, Person, Guilford, Alamance, Randolph, Davidson, and Davie. Those eight counties are organized into five districts. If your family lives in one of these counties, you fall within ONSC's service area and can join Scouting through the council.
The Eight Counties ONSC Serves
ONSC describes its territory as the greater Greensboro area of North Carolina. The counties it lists are:
| County | Notes |
|---|---|
| Guilford | Includes Greensboro, the council's home base |
| Rockingham | Northern part of the council area |
| Caswell | Northern part of the council area |
| Person | Northern part of the council area |
| Alamance | Eastern part of the council area |
| Randolph | Southern part of the council area |
| Davidson | Southern part of the council area |
| Davie | Western part of the council area |
The county groupings in the table reflect general geography, not an official district map — ONSC's published materials list the counties and state that they form five districts, but do not name each district or assign counties to them on the page.
How the Council Is Organized
ONSC is a division of Scouting America and operates as a local council. Its service area is divided into five districts, which are the local units that run programs, events, and support for packs, troops, and other Scouting units. The council also maintains a combined ONSC & District calendar, so families can check upcoming campouts, service projects, trainings, and community events by council or by district.
How to Confirm Your Family Is in the Service Area
- Check your county against the list above. If you live in Rockingham, Caswell, Person, Guilford, Alamance, Randolph, Davidson, or Davie County, you are in ONSC territory.
- Identify your district. Because ONSC organizes its eight counties into five districts, the specific district depends on your location within those counties. The council's district pages and calendar are the place to confirm which district covers your community.
- Find a unit and join. ONSC's "Join Scouting" section links to Cub Scouts (boys and girls, grades K–5, ages 5–10) and to the older-youth programs: Scouts BSA (grades 6–12, ages 11–17), and Venturing, Exploring, and Sea Scouts (all co-ed, ages 14–20).
If your county is not on the list, your family is outside ONSC's service area and would instead join through the Scouting America council that covers your county.
What Else the Council Offers Local Families
Beyond membership, ONSC supports families in its eight counties with:
- Cherokee Scout Reservation, the council's premier camp, offering summer programs and year-round adventures.
- Council and district calendars for campouts, service projects, trainings, and community events.
- Popcorn sales, the council's listed fundraising program.
- Weekly news updates for units and families.
The council frames its purpose around outdoor adventure, leadership development, and service, with adult leaders guiding Scouts toward what ONSC calls being "Prepared. For Life."
