Which devices does Polychromatic support?
Updated
Polychromatic supports Razer peripherals through OpenRazer, covering over 210 devices across keyboards, mice, mouse mats, and headsets. If your device is a Razer model listed as compatible with OpenRazer, Polychromatic can manage its RGB lighting and hardware features on GNU/Linux. Support for additional brands is planned but not yet available.
How device support works
Polychromatic is a front-end application, not a driver. It relies on OpenRazer, the underlying driver layer that actually communicates with Razer hardware on Linux. This means:
- Polychromatic's device coverage is effectively OpenRazer's device coverage.
- A device works in Polychromatic only if OpenRazer supports it first.
- New device support typically arrives through OpenRazer updates, then becomes usable in Polychromatic.
So the practical question isn't "Does Polychromatic support my device?" but "Does OpenRazer support my device?"
Device categories covered
According to the project, OpenRazer supports over 210 devices, including:
| Category | Examples |
|---|---|
| Keyboards | Razer BlackWidow and related models |
| Mice | Razer gaming mice |
| Mouse mats | Razer RGB mouse mats |
| Headsets | Razer headsets |
The homepage specifically welcomes "BlackWidow & friends," signaling keyboards as a well-represented category.
How to confirm your specific device
- Go to the Polychromatic website and open the Supported Devices page (linked from the homepage).
- Search for your exact Razer model name.
- If it appears, Polychromatic can control it via OpenRazer. If it doesn't, it isn't supported yet.
You can also cross-check the OpenRazer project's own device list, since that's the source of truth for hardware compatibility.
What Polychromatic can do with supported devices
For devices that are supported, Polychromatic lets you:
- Control lighting effects, including animated effects
- Configure hardware features
- Change settings quickly from a system tray applet
All of this runs locally — no cloud account and no login required.
Limitations to keep in mind
- Razer only, for now. The current focus is Razer hardware via OpenRazer. The project states more brands and features are still to come, but they aren't available yet.
- Not affiliated with Razer. Both Polychromatic and OpenRazer are independent projects and are not endorsed by or affiliated with Razer.
- Linux only. Polychromatic is a GNU/Linux application; it isn't built for Windows or macOS.
Bottom line
If you own a Razer keyboard, mouse, mouse mat, or headset that appears on the OpenRazer supported devices list, Polychromatic will manage it on GNU/Linux. Check the Supported Devices page for your exact model before installing — that's the fastest way to confirm compatibility.
