Which European Social Survey datasets and rounds are available?
Updated
The European Social Survey (ESS) currently offers Round 11 (2023/24) data for all 31 participating countries, CRONOS-3 online panel data from the Infra4NextGen project, and a three-wave ICOS Cities online panel from Munich and Paris (2023–2024). Round 12 (2025/26) data is scheduled for its first release in January 2027. All ESS data and documentation are now accessible only through the ESS Data Portal.
Main survey data: Round 11 (2023/24)
Round 11 is the most recent complete round of the core ESS survey. Data and post-stratification weights are available for all 31 countries that participated. If you need comparable cross-national attitudes, beliefs, and behaviour measures for the most recent period, this is the dataset to start with.
What's included
- Survey data from all 31 participating countries
- Post-stratification weights for producing representative estimates
- Accompanying documentation, accessible through the ESS Data Portal
How to get it
- Go to the ESS Data Portal (the site notes that access to ESS data and documentation has moved there exclusively).
- Register or log in as required by the portal.
- Select Round 11 and the countries or variables you need.
- Download the data files and the corresponding documentation.
Expected result: a country-comparable dataset with weights you can apply before estimating population-level statistics. A common snag is skipping the weights—unweighted results will not represent the target populations.
Online panel data: CRONOS-3
CRONOS-3 is ESS data collected via a web-first, cross-national, probability-based online panel, run as part of the Infra4NextGen project. It is a separate resource from the core round data and suits researchers interested in online-panel measurement rather than face-to-face survey data.
ICOS Cities panel data (Munich and Paris, 2023–2024)
As part of the ICOS Cities – Pilot Application in Urban Landscapes (PAUL) research project, the ESS developed a three-wave online panel fielded in Munich and Paris during 2023 and 2024. This is the dataset to use if your question is city-level and panel-based rather than nationally representative.
Round 12 (2025/26): what to expect
Initial Round 12 data is expected to be published for the first time in January 2027. Until then, Round 11 remains the latest full round. Plan analyses that depend on Round 12 around that release window.
Choosing the right dataset
| Dataset | Coverage | Design | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round 11 (2023/24) | 31 countries | Core ESS cross-national survey | Cross-national comparisons of attitudes and behaviour |
| CRONOS-3 | Multiple countries (Infra4NextGen) | Web-first probability-based online panel | Online-panel methodology and topical analyses |
| ICOS Cities panel | Munich and Paris | Three-wave online panel, 2023–2024 | City-level, longitudinal urban research |
| Round 12 (2025/26) | To be released | Core ESS round | Most recent data, available from January 2027 |

Beyond datasets, the ESS site publishes a Topline Findings series, an "Exploring public attitudes, informing public policy" series, and special reports on the human values scale and wellbeing. Methodology documentation is organised through the Survey Specification and a methodology flow diagram. These are useful for understanding how measures were constructed before you analyse the data.
