Which Image Formats Does BIRME Support?
Updated
BIRME accepts JPG, PNG, WebP, and AVIF files as input, and lets you export in the same format as the originals or convert to JPEG, WebP, or AVIF. If your batch is a mix of these four formats, you can process it in one pass; anything outside this list needs converting before you start.
Input formats
Drop files onto the page or use Browse from your computer. The supported inputs are:
- JPG / JPEG
- PNG
- WebP
- AVIF
The site notes it works best on a desktop computer; on a phone it points you to its separate apps at apps.birme.net. Processing runs in the browser rather than by uploading files to a server, which is why the page describes the workflow as privacy-focused.
Output formats and quality
Under Image Format & Quality you choose what the batch exports as:
| Output option | What it means |
|---|---|
| Same as original images | Each file keeps its own input format |
| JPEG | All files export as JPEG, with a JPEG Quality % slider |
| WEBP | All files export as WebP, with a WEBP Quality % slider |
| AVIF | All files export as AVIF, with an AVIF Quality % slider |
Two practical consequences:
- Mixed batches stay mixed if you pick "Same as original images" — a folder of PNG screenshots and JPG photos comes back as PNGs and JPGs respectively.
- Choosing a single format unifies the batch, which is useful when you need one consistent type for a website or upload form. The quality slider only appears for the format you selected, so set it before exporting.
How format choice interacts with bulk processing
Format is one setting applied to the whole batch, alongside width/height, crop behavior, watermark, border, and rename pattern. The rest of the workspace supports this:
- Smart crop with auto focal point detection keeps the important part of each image in frame when you resize to exact dimensions.
- Custom crop lets you draw your own crop area on each image individually.
- Batch rename with custom patterns and sequential numbering, e.g.
image-xxxorORIGINAL-NAME_400x400. - Export options: download a ZIP, download files individually, or save into a folder.
A typical task: you have 200 product photos as JPG and want them at 400×400 for a listing page. Set width and height to 400, keep ratio locking as needed, choose JPEG output, set the quality slider, apply a rename pattern, and export a ZIP. If some of those photos were PNG with transparency, converting the whole batch to JPEG would flatten that transparency — in that case either keep "Same as original images" or split the batch.
Things to watch for
- Transparency: PNG and WebP can carry alpha; JPEG cannot. If transparent images matter, avoid a blanket JPEG export.
- AVIF output is available, but check that your destination (site, CMS, app) accepts AVIF before converting a whole batch to it.
- High Quality Resize Method is an option on the page and is noted as possibly crashing in some browsers — if a large batch fails, that setting is a likely culprit.
- Settings persist: your configuration is saved automatically and restored on your next visit, so confirm the output format before a new batch rather than assuming defaults.
If your files are in a format not listed here, convert them to JPG, PNG, WebP, or AVIF first, then run the batch through BIRME.
