Which Last.fm history can SONICPRINT use for a collage?

Updated

SONICPRINT builds collages from your public Last.fm listening history, and it lets you pick any time range going back to 2005. The collage only reflects the scrobbles that fall inside the range you choose, so a period with few or no scrobbles will produce a sparse or empty result.

What data SONICPRINT pulls

SONICPRINT reads your public Last.fm scrobble history — the tracks Last.fm has logged for your account. It does not need private data beyond what Last.fm exposes publicly, and it does not invent listening data that isn't there.

Two practical consequences follow from that:

  • If your Last.fm profile is set to private, or scrobbling was never enabled, there is nothing for SONICPRINT to draw from.
  • If you only started scrobbling recently, older time ranges will be empty even though the tool technically supports them.

The time range you can choose

The generator covers any period since 2005, which is when Last.fm's scrobbling era effectively begins for most accounts. You are not limited to a fixed "last month" or "last year" window — you can select a custom span and the collage is assembled from whatever scrobbles exist inside it.

Range you pick What the collage shows
A single month Only that month's scrobbles
A full year Everything scrobbled in that year
A custom multi-year span All scrobbles across those years
A range before you started scrobbling Little or nothing

Why data volume matters

A collage is a grid of album or artist artwork, so its density depends on how many distinct items appear in your chosen range.

  • Heavy scrobbling period → a full, varied grid.
  • Light or intermittent period → repeated artwork and gaps.
  • No scrobbles in range → an empty or near-empty collage.

If a range looks thin, the fix is usually to widen it rather than to change any setting.

Checking your own history first

Before generating, confirm what SONICPRINT will actually have to work with:

  1. Open your Last.fm profile and check that recent scrobbles are visible.
  2. Confirm your profile's privacy setting allows public viewing.
  3. Note roughly when your scrobbling started, so you don't pick a range that predates it.
  4. Choose a range that matches a period you actually listened heavily.

If steps 1–3 check out, any range from 2005 onward that contains scrobbles will produce a usable collage.
