Which Mods and Clients Are Compatible with Iris Shaders?

Updated

Most mods work with Iris, but a handful of rendering-related mods and clients are either incompatible or only partially compatible. According to Iris's own FAQ, OptiFine, Canvas, and Vulkan mods will crash the game, Nvidium disables itself when shaders are on, Voxy and Distant Horizons need shader packs that explicitly support them, and Indium should not be used on 1.21.1 or higher. Hacked clients are not supported at all.

Compatibility at a glance

Mod or client Status with Iris What to expect
Most mods Compatible Work normally
Nvidium Installable, but limited Disables itself when shaders are enabled
Voxy Partial Only with shader packs that explicitly support it
Distant Horizons Partial Only with shader packs that explicitly support it
OptiFine Incompatible Crashes the game
Canvas Incompatible Crashes the game
Vulkan mods Incompatible Crashes the game
Indium (below 1.21.1) Compatible Can be used
Indium (1.21.1 and higher) Should not be used Remove it on these versions
Hacked clients (Meteor, Wurst) Not supported No support provided
Non-hacked clients (e.g. Lunar Client) Varies Support comes from that client's team, not Iris

Rendering mods that need attention

Nvidium

Nvidium can be installed alongside Iris, but it will disable itself whenever shaders are enabled. If your main reason for using Nvidium is its rendering path, enabling a shader pack effectively turns it off.

Voxy and Distant Horizons

These are compatible with some shader packs only. The shader pack itself must explicitly support them — installing Iris alone is not enough. If a pack doesn't list support, expect visual issues or missing functionality rather than a guaranteed crash.

Indium

Indium works below 1.21.1, but should not be used on 1.21.1 and higher. If you're on a newer version and still have Indium installed, remove it.

Mods that will crash the game

OptiFine, Canvas, and Vulkan mods are incompatible with Iris and will crash Minecraft. This matters most for OptiFine, since many players install it out of habit for shader support — with Iris, it needs to be removed entirely, not just disabled alongside it.

Clients

  • Hacked clients such as Meteor and Wurst are not supported.
  • Non-hacked clients such as Lunar Client may work, but any support for issues specific to that client must come from its own team. Iris does not handle client-exclusive problems.

Texture and resource packs

Most texture packs work normally. The exception is resource packs that use "core shaders" (shaders that don't require mods) — these will not work while a shader pack is enabled.

If a shader still doesn't load

Iris aims for broad compatibility, but some shaders may not support some devices. If you believe the failure is caused by Iris itself, the FAQ directs you to the project's Discord. Otherwise, contact the shader developer — the issue is likely on the pack's side.

Bedrock Edition

Iris does not run on Bedrock Edition, and Bedrock cannot be modded the same way due to restrictions on mobile devices. Any mobile "shader mod" for Bedrock that doesn't use the game's built-in features is a scam. On Windows, BetterRTX is the alternative Iris points to.

Getting Iris and Sodium

Iris ships with Sodium for optimized rendering out of the box. Both are available through the Iris installer, or from Modrinth and CurseForge.
