Cub Scouts
Cub Scouts is the entry-level program for younger children. It welcomes both boys and girls from kindergarten through fifth grade, roughly ages 5 to 10. Families new to Scouting typically start here.
Scouts BSA
Scouts BSA is the traditional troop program for youth in grades 6 through 12, ages 11 to 17. Like Cub Scouts, it is open to both boys and girls.
Venturing, Exploring, and Sea Scouts
These three programs are co-ed and designed for older youth ages 14 to 20. They offer distinct focuses, so the best fit depends on what your teen wants from Scouting. ONSC's site lists all three as options for this age group.
How ONSC Describes the Value of Scouting
ONSC frames its programs around three themes:
- Adventure — introducing youth to the outdoors and their place in it.
- Leadership — learning to delegate, communicate effectively, and motivate others toward shared goals.
- Service — with adult guidance, preparing Scouts for a lifelong journey to personal success.
The council describes itself as offering a structured, enriching environment with dedicated mentorship, aimed at building character, confidence, and values.
Where ONSC Serves
The council covers eight counties through five districts: Rockingham, Caswell, Person, Guilford, Alamance, Randolph, Davidson, and Davie. Families in the greater Greensboro area fall within this territory.
Next Step to Join
ONSC's website includes a "Join Scouting" section with a "Join Cub Scouts" entry point and program-specific "Learn More" links. To get started, visit onsc.org, review the program descriptions, and use the join links to begin registration. The site also maintains council and district calendars and weekly news, which are useful for confirming upcoming events and meeting times once you've chosen a program.
If your child is in grades K–5, start with Cub Scouts. If they are in grades 6–12, look at Scouts BSA. For youth 14–20, compare Venturing, Exploring, and Sea Scouts to find the focus that matches their interests.
