Which video formats can Video Cutter Online process?

Updated

Video Cutter Online (video-cutter-js.com) accepts 15 input formats: MP4, WEBM, MOV, FLV, 3GP, M4V, MPG, MPEG, MKV, AVI, WMV, MV, DV, ASF, and 3G2. If your file is in one of these formats, you can open it in the browser tool and start cutting. If it isn't, the tool won't load it — you'd need to convert the file first.

Supported input formats

Format Typical source
MP4 Phones, cameras, downloads
WEBM Browser recordings, web video
MOV iPhone, macOS, QuickTime
FLV Older web video, Flash-era captures
3GP Older mobile phones
M4V iTunes, Apple devices
MPG / MPEG DVD rips, legacy video
MKV Media players, rips with multiple tracks
AVI Camcorders, older Windows tools
WMV Windows Media, older exports
MV Legacy/niche containers
DV Camcorder tape transfers
ASF Windows streaming format
3G2 Older mobile phones (CDMA)

The tool's own instructions say to check that your file matches a supported format before starting — this is the one step that determines whether everything else works.

What to do if your format isn't listed

The tool also links to related converters (a JS audio converter and a JS video converter). If your file is in a format outside the list above, converting it to MP4 or WEBM first is the most reliable route, since both are on the supported list and are widely accepted.

Input format vs. output format

These are separate choices. The input format is whatever you open; the output format is selected independently in the "Conversion format" panel. Output options include:

  • Video containers: MP4, AVI, MPG, MOV, FLV, 3GP, WEBM, MKV, WMV, GIF
  • Device presets: Apple Video, Android Video
  • Video encoders: H.264, MPEG-4
  • Audio encoders: MP3, AAC

So you can open an MKV and export an MP4, or open a MOV and export a WEBM — the input list and output list don't have to match.

How to verify your file will work

  1. Check the file extension against the list above.
  2. Open the tool and use Choose file... or drag the file into the drop area.
  3. If a preview appears, the file was read successfully and you can proceed to cut, convert, rotate, mirror, compress, resize, or crop.
  4. If nothing loads, the format is likely unsupported — convert it to MP4 or WEBM and try again.

A note on privacy

According to the site, processing happens in the browser using HTML5 and JS, and video files do not need to be uploaded to a server. That matters for format choice only in one way: since everything runs locally, a very large or unusual file may be limited by your browser and device rather than by a server-side format restriction.
