EnglishWhich Video Products and Technology Did On2 Technologies Offer?
Updated
On2 Technologies offered a family of Flix-branded video encoding and playback products: Flix Pro, Flix Standard, Flix Exporter, Flix PowerPlayers, Flix Live, Flix DirectShow SDK, Flix Publisher, and Flix Engine. According to the company's own site, Google acquired On2 Technologies and its video products and technology in February 2010, and all of these Flix products are no longer for sale. So the list below is a historical product inventory, not a current catalog.
The Flix Product Line
The products fall into a few practical groups based on what each name suggests about its role in a video workflow.
Encoding and Export Tools
- Flix Pro — the higher-tier encoder in the Flix line.
- Flix Standard — the standard-tier encoder.
- Flix Exporter — an export component, presumably for pushing video out of an editing or authoring tool into the Flix encoding pipeline.
Playback and Delivery
- Flix PowerPlayers — playback components for presenting encoded video.
- Flix Live — a live video product.
- Flix Publisher — a publishing tool for getting video onto a destination.
Integration and Engine
- Flix DirectShow SDK — a software development kit built around DirectShow, Microsoft's multimedia framework, for integrating Flix encoding into Windows applications.
- Flix Engine — the underlying encoding engine, likely licensed for embedding in other software.
What Happened to These Products
The page evidence is direct: Google acquired On2 Technologies and its video products and technology in February 2010, and the Flix products listed above are no longer for sale. The site itself carries a 2010 Google copyright notice.
This matters if you arrived at on2.com looking to download a trial, buy a license, or find support. There is no purchase path and no current product documentation offered there. The page functions as a closure notice.
Practical Implications
| If you want to… | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|
| Buy Flix Pro, Flix Standard, or any Flix product | Not possible — no longer for sale |
| Download a current version or update | No current offering is described |
| Get support for an existing license | No support channel is described on the page |
| Understand what On2 made | The eight Flix products above, plus its video technology, acquired by Google in 2010 |
If you encounter Flix-related files, licenses, or references in older projects, treat them as legacy software from a discontinued line. Any decision about using, migrating from, or maintaining such software should account for the fact that the vendor no longer sells or (per the page) supports it.
