About the Society

The SGL was founded in 1968 and describes itself as the largest and most active organization in North America serving scholars who teach and research in Germanic Linguistics and Philology. Its international membership covers all areas and approaches to the field—from formal syntax and phonology to historical linguistics and textual editing—and represents scholars working on languages such as Modern German, Dutch, Yiddish, the Scandinavian languages, Afrikaans, Pennsylvania German, English before 1500, and Gothic, along with texts and manuscripts in those languages.

Two ongoing activities are worth noting if you want to follow the Society's work:

  • Journal of Germanic Linguistics (JGL) — published quarterly by the Society.
  • Germanic Linguistics Annual Conference (GLAC) — held each spring under the Society's auspices.
