Who Are the Members of Zingaresca Ensemble?

Updated

Zingaresca Ensemble is a three-person collaboration: Romani guitar virtuoso Vadim Kolpakov, seven-string guitar revivalist Oleg Timofeyev, and Juilliard-trained baritone Anton Belov. The group formed in 2006 and performs music drawn from Romani ("Gypsy"), Jewish, and Eastern European traditions, combining classical training with folk expression.

The Three Members

Vadim Kolpakov — Romani Guitar Virtuoso

Kolpakov is described as a celebrated Romani ("Gypsy") virtuoso. His role anchors the ensemble's connection to living Romani musical tradition — the "fiery vitality of folk musical expression" the group cites as one half of its identity.

Oleg Timofeyev — Seven-String Guitar Pioneer

Timofeyev is credited as a pioneer in the revival of the seven-string guitar. This instrument is central to the Russian and Eastern European guitar heritage the ensemble draws on, and his work gives the group its classical lineage.

Anton Belov — Baritone

Belov trained at Juilliard. As a baritone, he brings the vocal dimension to a repertoire that includes Romani and Jewish diaspora song traditions alongside instrumental guitar music.

What the Combination Produces

The ensemble's stated approach is to interweave classical Eastern European guitar heritage with Romani and Jewish diaspora traditions. In practice, that means three distinct backgrounds feeding one sound:

Member Background Contribution
Vadim Kolpakov Romani guitar virtuoso Folk vitality, Romani repertoire
Oleg Timofeyev Seven-string guitar revival Classical Eastern European guitar heritage
Anton Belov Juilliard-trained baritone Vocal performance

The Italian word "Zingaresca" means "in a Gypsy style," which names the aesthetic the trio works in.

Beyond Concerts

The ensemble also offers educational programs aimed at colleges and universities. According to the group, these include:

  • A screening of Arbatfilm's documentary Gypsy Vengerka (90 minutes, 2022), followed by a Q&A session
  • A vocal masterclass
  • A guitar masterclass
  • A lecture on Romani culture and history
