Who Can Join Warborough Jujutsu Club?
Updated
Warborough Jujutsu Club is open to adults of all ability levels, including complete beginners and people who have trained for decades. You do not need to be particularly fit or flexible to start. The one firm restriction is age: the club is adults only, and this style of jujutsu is not suitable for children. Under-18s are instead pointed toward the Inkai Judo clubs.
Who the club is for
The club describes itself as a small, enthusiastic group with a wide mix of experience — some members have only recently started martial arts, while others have been practising for decades. That range is deliberate: all abilities are welcomed.
If you are wondering whether you are "ready" to start, the club's own answer is that you don't need to be. You don't need to be particularly fit or flexible — just interested in trying something new.
The age rule
| Who | Can they join? |
|---|---|
| Adults (18+) | Yes — all ability levels |
| Complete beginners | Yes |
| Experienced martial artists | Yes |
| Under-18s | No — the style is not suitable for children |
For those under eighteen, the club recommends the Inkai Judo clubs instead. The instructor notes that his own son used to train with them.
What to expect if you qualify
There are no separate beginner classes. Newcomers simply come along to one of the regular Tuesday night sessions.
- What to wear: something comfortable you can move easily in — a T-shirt and tracksuit bottoms is fine. Kit from another martial art is also fine to wear.
- First class: free, so you can get a feel for what the club does.
- After that: sessions are £5.00 for a two-hour class.
- Before visiting: it's worth emailing [email protected], since work commitments occasionally mean a class has to be cancelled when no instructor is available.
A note on the style
The club practises Daiwa Ryu jujutsu, which derives from Daito Ryu — the same ancestor as Aikido and Hakko Ryu. Because of that shared heritage there are similarities in approach, though each school emphasises different aspects. Other jujutsu styles, particularly Brazilian Ju Jitsu (BJJ), may look and train very differently.
So if you're an adult, curious, and free on a Tuesday night, the main thing to do is send an email before you turn up.
