Who Can Train at Seven Star Seattle?
Updated
Seven Star Seattle is a nonprofit martial arts school that has operated since 1981, and its core training programs are open to trans, nonbinary, and gender-expansive people of any gender, as well as all women, both trans and cis. If you fall into one of those groups and are at least 13 years old, you can register for the Beginner's Cycle or Try a Class Night. The separate Community Self Defense Class is open to everyone age 13 and up, regardless of gender identity.
Who is eligible for regular martial arts training?
Seven Star's martial arts program is specifically designed for gender-marginalized individuals. According to the organization, the following people are welcome to train:
- Trans people of any gender
- Nonbinary people
- Gender-expansive people
- All women, both trans and cis
This eligibility applies to the school's standard training path, which begins with the 4-week Beginner's Cycle. The same groups are also welcome at Try a Class Night, a drop-in session for people age 13+ with no prior experience required.
Who can attend the Community Self Defense Class?
The Community Self Defense Class has a broader audience than the regular martial arts program. It is open to all individuals age 13 and older, not limited to the gender-marginalized groups described above. If you want to try a self defense class without committing to the school's ongoing martial arts curriculum, this is the entry point available to you.

How to get started
If you are eligible and want to become a student, the first step is the 4-week Beginner's Cycle. The next cycle runs from September 15 to October 8, and you can register through the Beginner's Cycle page on the Seven Star website.
If you would rather sample the school before committing, Try a Class Night takes place Wednesday, September 2nd, from 6:30 to 8:00pm. It is a chance to try Kajukenbo, meet students and teachers, and get a feel for the curriculum, teaching style, and community.
For the Community Self Defense Class, the next session is Sunday, September 27th at 1pm, open to anyone age 13+.
A note on space rentals
Seven Star's building can be rented for rehearsals, classes, parties, and other events during mornings, early afternoons, and some evenings and weekends. However, the organization states it is not accepting new rental inquiries at this time, so rental availability is not a current option for new users.
