What this means for users
- Long-running project. Development has continued since 2001, so the tool has a long history behind it.
- Community-supported maintenance. The current maintainer works with the community rather than a large commercial team.
- No animation support. Wings 3D is a subdivision modeler; the site states there is no support for animation.
Background worth knowing
Wings 3D is an advanced subdivision modeler described as both powerful and easy to use. It offers a wide range of modeling tools, a customizable interface, support for lights and materials, and a built-in AutoUV mapping facility.
The name comes from the Winged Edge Data Structure (WEDS), the data structure used to store adjacency relationships between edges, faces, and vertices in a model. The application itself is written in Erlang, an open source functional programming language distributed by Ericsson.
Wings 3D is open source and completely free for use in both personal and commercial projects.
