Why Aren't YouTube Videos Loading With Privacy Badger?
Updated
Privacy Badger can break YouTube playback because it sometimes learns to block domains that YouTube needs to deliver video, not just to serve ads. The usual fix is to open the Privacy Badger menu on youtube.com, find the blocked domain that is breaking playback, and move its slider back to yellow or green. If that doesn't restore video, disable Privacy Badger for youtube.com entirely, or report the bug to EFF.
This applies to the standard desktop and Android browser extensions listed on privacybadger.org (Chrome, Firefox, Firefox for Android, Edge, Edge for Android, Opera, and Brave). It does not apply to browsers the site lists as unsupported.
Why YouTube playback breaks
Privacy Badger is made by EFF and works by watching third-party domains across the sites you visit. When the same domain appears to be tracking you on multiple sites, Privacy Badger moves its slider toward red and blocks it. That behavior is automatic and based on observed tracking, not on a fixed list of "bad" domains.
YouTube is a special case because the same third-party domains can be involved in both advertising and video delivery. A domain that looks like a tracker on other sites may also be needed for the player to fetch and play the video. When Privacy Badger blocks it, the page may load but the video stalls, shows a spinner, or fails outright.
Two related questions in the Privacy Badger FAQ point at the same area:
- "Why aren't videos loading on YouTube?"
- "Why isn't Privacy Badger blocking ads on YouTube?"
They exist together because YouTube is hard to handle cleanly: blocking too much breaks playback, and blocking too little lets ads through.
Fix it in the Privacy Badger menu
- Open YouTube and start the video that fails.
- Click the Privacy Badger icon in your browser toolbar.
- Look at the list of domains for the current page and find any set to red (blocked).
- Move the slider for the suspect domain to yellow (cookie blocking only) or green (allowed).
- Reload the page and try the video again.
If you are not sure which domain is responsible, move blocked domains back one at a time and reload after each change. The domain that restores playback is the one to leave at yellow or green.
If that doesn't work
- Disable Privacy Badger for youtube.com. Use the option in the Privacy Badger menu to turn it off for that site only, then reload. This keeps protection on everywhere else.
- Check for conflicts. Privacy Badger is designed to work alongside other extensions, including adblockers, but combinations can still produce playback failures. Temporarily disabling other extensions on YouTube is a quick way to tell whether Privacy Badger is actually the cause.
- Confirm your browser is supported. If privacybadger.org shows "Browser Not Supported" for your browser, install one of the supported builds or use the alternative installation options listed on the site.
What the slider colors mean
| Color | Meaning | Effect on the site |
|---|---|---|
| Red | Blocked | The domain's content and cookies are blocked |
| Yellow | Cookie blocking | The domain loads, but its cookies are blocked |
| Green | Allowed | No blocking applied |
For YouTube playback problems, yellow is often the practical middle ground: it stops cookie-based tracking while still letting the domain load what the player needs.
Reporting a bug
If a video still won't load after you have allowed the relevant domains and disabled Privacy Badger for youtube.com, it may be a bug rather than a setting. The Privacy Badger FAQ includes a "I found a bug! What do I do now?" entry, which is the right starting point for reporting it to EFF.
A note on YouTube ads
Fixing playback and blocking YouTube ads are not the same goal. Privacy Badger's FAQ addresses why it doesn't block all ads on YouTube, so if your aim is ad-free playback rather than working playback, expect Privacy Badger alone to be an incomplete answer.
