Why can't Watchpubs play a video from some websites, and what can you do?
Updated
Watchpubs can only play a video from another site if you give it a direct video file link — typically one ending in something like videos/example.mp4. Many websites don't expose links in that form, so those sources simply won't work. For subscription streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime, playback is explicitly unsupported; Watchpubs' own FAQ points to alternatives like Scener or Metastream for those.
What "direct video link" actually means
A direct link points to the video file itself, not to a page that plays the video inside a player. When you paste a link into a Watchpubs room, the app tries to load that URL as media. If the URL returns a web page, a login wall, or a stream that requires the site's own player, there is nothing for Watchpubs to play.
The practical test: open the link in a browser tab. If it starts playing the raw file (or offers a download of the file), it's likely a direct link. If it loads a page with menus, comments, or a branded player around the video, it isn't.
Which sources work and which don't
| Source type | Works in Watchpubs? | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube | Yes | Use the built-in YouTube search bar; play in two clicks |
| SoundCloud | Yes | Supported for listening together |
| Google Drive files | Yes | Paste the link; the app handles the rest |
| Twitch clips | Yes | Paste the clip link |
Other sites with a direct file link (e.g. .../videos/example.mp4) |
Sometimes | You must obtain the direct link yourself |
| Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, similar services | No | Not supported; use Scener or Metastream instead |
The "sometimes" row is the source of most frustration. Watchpubs' FAQ is direct that getting a direct link "can be done in various ways, but it works with not every website." So even with effort, some sites will never play.
What you can do when a link won't play
1. Check whether a direct link exists at all
Look at the URL of the video you want to share. If it's a page address rather than a file address, the site probably doesn't expose a direct link. In that case, stop here — no amount of retrying in the room will fix it.
2. Try to obtain the direct file link
If the site does host files openly, you may be able to find the file URL (for example, through the page's source or a download option). Only use this for content you have the right to view and share. If you can't find a link ending in a video file extension, the source isn't usable.
3. Switch to a supported source
For the same content, check whether it exists on YouTube, SoundCloud, Google Drive, or as a Twitch clip. Pasting a supported link is the fastest fix, and YouTube in particular is built into the room with a search bar and one-click playback.
4. Use a different tool for subscription services
If the video lives on Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime, Watchpubs won't play it. The site's own recommendation is to try Scener or Metastream for those services.
5. Confirm the room itself is fine
If a link that should work fails, rule out the room before blaming the source: paste a known YouTube link into the same room. If that plays, the problem is the link, not Watchpubs.
Quick reference
- Direct file link (ends in a video file, e.g.
videos/example.mp4): may work. - Page link from a random site: usually won't work.
- YouTube, SoundCloud, Google Drive, Twitch clips: supported.
- Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime: not supported — use Scener or Metastream.
- Room capacity: up to 100 users at once, so a failed link isn't a capacity issue.
The short version: Watchpubs is a shared player, not a screen-sharing tool. It needs a playable file or a supported platform link, and when a site doesn't provide one, the fix is to change the source rather than the room.
