Why Choose LibreOffice Over Other Office Suites?

Updated

LibreOffice is worth choosing if you want a full office suite that costs nothing, runs on open source code anyone can inspect and improve, and does not push AI features on you. The official site describes it as "an open source office suite created by you, for you," offering "unfettered access to our office productivity tools, at no cost to you." If your priority is a paid ecosystem with vendor-managed cloud services, or you depend on features only another suite provides, that trade-off may not suit you.

What you actually get

LibreOffice bundles six applications under one install:

Tool What it is for
Writer Word processing, from quick notes to full-length books
Calc Spreadsheets for analyzing data, crunching numbers, and building visuals
Impress Multimedia presentations
Draw Diagrams through to complex 3D illustrations
Base Databases: tables, forms, queries, and reports in one place
Math Mathematical formulas via a visual editor or plain text

The current release highlighted on the site is LibreOffice 26.8.

The reasons the project itself gives

The "Why Choose LibreOffice?" section on libreoffice.org makes three claims worth weighing:

  • No cost. The suite is provided at no cost to you, with unfettered access to the productivity tools.
  • Open development. Development is open to all, and the software is tested and used daily by a large, devoted user community. Because it is free and open source software, anyone can study how it works and add improvements.
  • Language reach. The community encourages translation, documentation, and maintenance of the software in all of the world's languages. The download page alone lists dozens of localizations, from Afrikaans and Basque to Chinese (traditional), Japanese, and Welsh.

The site's own framing also stresses privacy and the absence of forced AI — a meaningful differentiator if you would rather not have assistant features embedded in your documents by default.

How to decide

Choose LibreOffice when:

  • You want a complete office suite without paying for it.
  • You value being able to inspect and modify the source, or want software maintained by a broad community rather than a single vendor.
  • You work in a language that needs community-supported translation and documentation.
  • You prefer an office suite that does not impose AI features on your workflow.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You need tight integration with a specific commercial cloud ecosystem.
  • Your collaborators or clients require file formats or workflows that only another suite handles reliably.
  • You want vendor-provided support contracts rather than community help.

Getting started and getting help

Download the suite from libreoffice.org, then use the per-tool guide books linked from the homepage (one each for Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Base, and Math) as your reference. For questions, the site's navigation points to Get Help and Community sections.

If you want to go beyond using it, the project welcomes contributors across Design, Localisation, Marketing, Documentation, Development, Infrastructure, and Quality Assurance. One practical note from the site: before starting to contribute, it is recommended that you schedule an orienting interview with TDF mentor Ilmari Lauhakangas.
