Why does Backloggery require JavaScript to work?
Updated
Backloggery requires JavaScript because the site is a web application, not a static page: when you open it with JavaScript disabled, it can only show a fallback message — "We're sorry but the Backloggery doesn't work without JavaScript enabled. Please enable it to continue." Enable JavaScript in your browser and reload the page to use it normally. This applies to any browser or device where scripting is turned off, blocked by an extension, or restricted by a network policy.
What JavaScript powers on Backloggery
Backloggery's stated purpose is to "track your now playing, backlog progress, and priorities." Those tasks depend on interactive, client-side behavior rather than pre-rendered HTML:
- State changes without full page loads — marking a game as now playing, completed, or backlogged updates your view dynamically.
- Progress and priority views — sorting, filtering, and reordering your backlog happen in the browser.
- Session-based personal data — your game list and statuses are rendered into the interface after the page loads.
When scripting is unavailable, none of this can run, so the site serves the fallback notice instead of a broken or empty interface.
How to enable JavaScript and verify it worked
- Check your browser's JavaScript setting. In most browsers this lives under Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → JavaScript. Make sure "Allowed" is selected (or that Backloggery isn't in a blocked list).
- Check extensions. Ad blockers, script blockers, and privacy extensions can block JavaScript per-site. Allow backloggery.com in those extensions, or pause them for the site.
- Reload the page. After enabling JavaScript, do a hard reload (Ctrl+F5 / Cmd+Shift+R) so the browser fetches the working version.
- Verify the result. The fallback message should be gone and you should see the site's tracking interface instead.
If the message still appears after all four steps, the block is likely outside your browser — see below.
Common reasons it still fails
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Fallback message on one browser only | JavaScript disabled or blocked in that browser | Enable it or allow the site in that browser's settings |
| Fallback message on every browser | Extension or system-wide script blocking | Disable the blocker or whitelist backloggery.com |
| Works at home, fails at work/school | Network or device policy blocks scripts | Try another network or device; this is outside your control |
| Page loads but nothing is interactive | Scripts partially blocked or failed to load | Disable blockers, clear cache, retry |
What to expect once JavaScript is on
With scripting enabled, Backloggery works as intended: you can record what you're now playing, track backlog progress, and set priorities across your game collection. The JavaScript requirement isn't a limitation you can work around with a different URL or a text-only view — it's how the site delivers its core features.
