Why Does BudgetDuo Require JavaScript to Run?

Updated

BudgetDuo requires JavaScript because it is a client-side web app: the shared-expense calculator runs entirely in your browser rather than on a server. If JavaScript is disabled or blocked, the page can only show the static fallback message "You need to enable JavaScript to run this app." — no input fields, no calculation, no results. To use it, allow JavaScript for budgetduo.com and reload the page.

What you see when JavaScript is off

BudgetDuo's page evidence shows only a single line of text when scripts don't execute:

You need to enable JavaScript to run this app.

That message is the app's shell. Everything else — the fields where you enter incomes or shared costs, and the logic that splits expenses between partners — is generated by JavaScript after the page loads. So a disabled script setting doesn't produce a degraded version of the calculator; it produces no calculator at all.

How to enable JavaScript and get the page working

The exact menu names differ by browser, but the path is the same: find the site-permission or content setting for JavaScript, allow it for budgetduo.com, then reload.

Chrome (desktop)

  1. Open chrome://settings/content/javascript.
  2. Under Allowed to use JavaScript, choose Add.
  3. Enter budgetduo.com and save.
  4. Reload the BudgetDuo tab.

Expected result: the fallback text is replaced by the working app interface.

Safari (macOS)

  1. Safari → Settings → Websites → JavaScript.
  2. Set JavaScript to Allow (or allow it specifically for budgetduo.com if it appears in the list).
  3. Reload the page.

Firefox

  1. Open about:config and confirm the warning, or use Settings → Privacy & Security → Permissions.
  2. Ensure JavaScript is enabled; if you use an extension such as NoScript, add budgetduo.com to its allowlist.
  3. Reload the page.

Mobile browsers

In Chrome for Android, tap the lock/site icon in the address bar → Permissions → allow JavaScript if the option is exposed. On iOS, JavaScript is controlled system-wide under Settings → Safari → Advanced, so check that it hasn't been turned off there.

Common reasons it still won't load

Symptom Likely cause What to try
Same "enable JavaScript" text after allowing it Page served from cache Hard-reload (Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+R) or clear the site's cache
Works in one browser, not another Extension blocking scripts Disable script blockers or add budgetduo.com to the allowlist
Blank page, no message Script loaded but blocked mid-run Check the browser console for blocked requests; try a private window
Fails only on a work or school network Network policy or proxy stripping scripts Try a different network or device

A quick test: open a private/incognito window with extensions disabled. If BudgetDuo loads there, the problem is a setting or extension in your normal profile rather than the site itself.

Why the app was built this way

Running the calculation in the browser means your income and expense figures are processed on your device instead of being submitted to a server for each calculation. That is also why the app cannot fall back to a server-rendered version when scripts are off — there is no server-side calculation path to fall back to. The trade-off is the hard dependency you're seeing: no JavaScript, no BudgetDuo.

If you've allowed JavaScript, reloaded, and tried a private window and the page still shows only the fallback text, the issue is most likely on the network or browser-policy side rather than something you can fix from the BudgetDuo page itself.
