Why Does OpenDota Show a JavaScript Warning, and How Can I Fix It?
Updated
OpenDota is a JavaScript-rendered web app, so if your browser blocks or disables scripts, the site can only show a fallback message instead of the actual statistics interface. The fix is to allow JavaScript for opendota.com, then reload the page. This applies to desktop and mobile browsers, and to any extension or privacy tool that is stripping scripts before the page runs.
What the warning actually means
The message you see is a static fallback: "Looks like your browser isn't allowing scripts! Enable JavaScript to run this app." It is not an error from OpenDota's servers, and it does not mean the site is down. It means the browser loaded the page shell but refused to execute the scripts that build the match, player, and hero views.
Because OpenDota's interface is assembled client-side, there is no meaningful non-JavaScript version of the site to fall back to. Until scripts are allowed, the page has nothing to display.
Common causes
- JavaScript is disabled globally in browser settings.
- A content blocker, ad blocker, or script blocker is blocking scripts on opendota.com.
- A privacy-focused browser or "strict" tracking-protection mode is blocking scripts by default.
- A corporate network, proxy, or security appliance is stripping scripts.
- A browser extension such as NoScript, uBlock Origin, or a similar tool is set to block the domain.
How to fix it
1. Check whether JavaScript is enabled
In most browsers, JavaScript is on by default. If it was turned off manually:
- Chrome / Edge: Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → JavaScript → set to "Sites can use JavaScript."
- Firefox: Type
about:configin the address bar, search forjavascript.enabled, and make sure it is set totrue. - Safari: Settings → Security (or Websites → JavaScript) and confirm JavaScript is allowed.
2. Allow scripts for opendota.com specifically
If JavaScript is enabled globally but still blocked here, check per-site permissions:
- Open the site settings for
opendota.comin your browser and confirm scripts are not set to "Block." - In Chrome/Edge, click the icon next to the address bar → Site settings → JavaScript → Allow.
3. Check your extensions
Disable script blockers, ad blockers, or privacy extensions one at a time and reload. If the page loads, re-enable them and add opendota.com to the allowlist. This is the most common cause when JavaScript is otherwise enabled.
4. Try a clean profile or another browser
Open the site in a private/incognito window with extensions disabled, or in a different browser. If it works there, the problem is in your main profile's settings or extensions, not in OpenDota.
5. Reload after changing settings
After enabling JavaScript or allowlisting the domain, do a hard reload (Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows/Linux, Cmd+Shift+R on macOS) so the browser fetches and runs the scripts fresh.
How to verify it worked
Once scripts are allowed, the fallback message disappears and the OpenDota interface loads: you should see the site's navigation and data views rather than the script warning. If the message persists, the block is still active somewhere — recheck the extension list and any network-level filtering.
If it still does not load
- Try a different network (for example, a mobile hotspot) to rule out a proxy or firewall stripping scripts.
- Confirm the browser is up to date; very old versions can fail on modern scripts.
- If you are on a managed device, your organization's policy may block scripts — that has to be changed by whoever administers the device.
The warning is a client-side condition, not a server-side outage, so the resolution almost always sits in your browser settings, extensions, or network rather than in OpenDota itself.
