Why Is FFmpeg Online Stuck on "initializing"?

Updated

FFmpeg Online (ffmpeg.wide.video) shows "initializing..." while the browser-based app loads its WebAssembly build of FFmpeg. If it stays there, the most common fixes are, in order: reload the page, check your connection, try a different modern browser, and disable extensions that block scripts or WebAssembly. If none of that works, the tool may simply need more time or memory than your device can give it.

What "initializing..." actually means

FFmpeg Online runs FFmpeg inside your browser rather than on a server. Before you can convert or process anything, the page has to download and start a WebAssembly (Wasm) version of FFmpeg, then hand control to the interface. The "initializing..." text is the loading state for that step.

That means the message is not an error by itself. It is a progress indicator. It only becomes a problem when it never resolves.

Quick checks, in the order worth trying

  1. Reload the page. A single hard refresh (Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows/Linux, Cmd+Shift+R on macOS) clears a partially loaded script or Wasm module. This resolves a surprising share of stuck loads.
  2. Confirm your internet connection. The Wasm binary is fetched over the network the first time. A dropped or very slow connection can leave the page waiting indefinitely. Test another site in the same tab.
  3. Switch browsers. Use a current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari. Older browsers and some embedded webviews lack the WebAssembly and related APIs the tool depends on.
  4. Disable blocking extensions. Ad blockers, script blockers, privacy extensions, and strict tracking protection can block the Wasm download or the scripts that start it. Try an incognito/private window with extensions off, or allow the site.
  5. Give it time and memory. Browser-based media tools are heavy. On a low-RAM device, a busy machine, or a tab with many other pages open, initialization can take much longer or stall. Close other tabs and retry.

If it still will not load

Symptom Likely cause What to try
Stuck for a few seconds, then loads Normal loading Wait
Stuck indefinitely on a fast connection Script or Wasm blocked Disable extensions, try incognito
Loads on one browser, not another Browser too old or missing APIs Update or switch browser
Loads sometimes, stalls other times Memory or CPU pressure Close tabs, retry on a lighter device

If the page never gets past "initializing..." after all of the above, the limitation is likely on your device or network rather than something you can fix from the page. In that case, a locally installed FFmpeg is the more reliable route, since it does not depend on a browser loading a large Wasm module first.

A note on expectations

Because FFmpeg Online is a browser tool, its startup cost is real: it must pull down and spin up a full media engine before anything works. Treat a short "initializing..." pause as normal, and treat a permanent one as a loading failure to troubleshoot with the steps above.
