Why Is My Shader Not Working with Iris Shaders?

Updated

Iris is an open-source shader mod for Minecraft: Java Edition that runs OptiFine shader packs and Iris-enhanced packs, and it ships with Sodium for optimized rendering. If a shader pack isn't loading or applying, the cause is usually one of three things: the pack doesn't support your device, a rendering mod in your setup conflicts with Iris, or the pack itself has a bug. Iris states that some shaders may not support some devices, so a pack failing on your hardware isn't automatically an Iris problem.

Check for incompatible rendering mods first

This is the most common and most fixable cause. Iris lists specific mods that change rendering and how they behave:

Mod Status with Iris
Nvidium Disables itself when shaders are enabled, but can stay installed
Voxy, Distant Horizons Compatible only with some shader packs; the pack must explicitly support them
OptiFine, Canvas, Vulkan mods Incompatible — will crash the game
Indium Works below 1.21.1; do not use on 1.21.1 or higher
Hacked clients (Meteor, Wurst) Not supported
Non-hacked clients (e.g. Lunar Client) May be supported by that client's team — contact them for client-specific issues

If you have OptiFine, Canvas, or a Vulkan mod installed alongside Iris, remove it. If you're on 1.21.1 or newer, remove Indium. If you use Voxy or Distant Horizons, confirm the shader pack you chose actually supports them.

Rule out a device or pack limitation

Iris aims for broad compatibility, but it explicitly notes that some shaders may not support some devices. Before assuming Iris is broken:

  • Try a different shader pack. If a second pack loads correctly, the problem is the first pack, not Iris.
  • Check the pack's own documentation for hardware requirements or known issues.
  • Confirm the pack is meant for your Minecraft version — Iris supports all versions 1.16.5 and higher, but a pack built for a different version may not load.

Decide who to contact

Iris gives a clear split for where to report a problem:

  • If you believe the shader not loading is due to an issue in Iris, join the Iris Discord and report it there.
  • If the shader itself is the problem, contact the shader developer instead.

The practical test: if other packs work and only one fails, it's the pack developer's issue. If no pack loads at all on a supported version and loader, it's more likely an Iris or setup issue.

Verify your base setup is supported

A shader can't work if Iris itself isn't running correctly. Confirm:

  • Version: Minecraft 1.16.5 or higher. Versions missing from the installer were likely removed because the next release is compatible with servers on that version.
  • Mod loader: Fabric on 1.16.5 and higher, or NeoForge on 1.21.1 and higher. Forge is not supported.
  • Installation: Iris ships with Sodium, and both are available through the Iris installer or from Modrinth and CurseForge.

If you're on Forge, or on a version below 1.16.5, Iris will not run and no shader pack will load.

A note on resource packs and Bedrock

  • Resource packs that use "core shaders" (shaders that don't require mods) will not work while a shader pack is enabled. Most ordinary texture packs work fine.
  • Iris does not run on Bedrock Edition. Iris states that any shader mod for Bedrock on mobile that doesn't use the game's built-in features is a scam. On Windows, BetterRTX is suggested as an alternative.

Quick checklist

  1. Remove OptiFine, Canvas, or Vulkan mods; remove Indium on 1.21.1+.
  2. Confirm you're on Fabric 1.16.5+ or NeoForge 1.21.1+.
  3. Test a second shader pack to isolate whether the problem is the pack or Iris.
  4. If one pack fails and others work, contact that pack's developer.
  5. If nothing loads on a supported setup, report it in the Iris Discord.
