Why OpenChaos.dev Shows a GitHub API Error 404

Updated

OpenChaos.dev loads its dynamic content — the merge countdown, the "Hall of Chaos" past-winner list, and other community data — by calling the GitHub API from your browser. When that call fails, the page renders a placeholder instead of the data, and you see the message "GitHub API error: 404 — Try refreshing the page in a minute." This is a data-fetching failure on the page, not a sign that OpenChaos.dev itself is down. The site's own suggested fix is to wait about a minute and refresh.

What the error actually means

A 404 from the GitHub API means the specific resource the page requested could not be found at that address. On OpenChaos.dev this typically shows up in two places:

  • Hall of Chaos — Past Winners: the list of previously merged community PRs
  • The merge countdown / live project data near the top of the page

Because these sections are populated at runtime, a failed request leaves them empty and prints the error text in their place. The rest of the page — headings, layout, the "Control vs Chaos" framing — still renders, which is why the site looks partly broken rather than fully offline.

Why a 404 happens here

The most common causes, in rough order of likelihood:

  1. The repository, branch, or file path changed. If the project was renamed, a branch was deleted, or a data file moved, the old API URL returns 404 until the site is updated to match.
  2. Rate limiting or unauthenticated request limits. GitHub caps unauthenticated API calls per IP per hour. When you hit the cap, requests can fail; depending on how the site handles the response, you may see a 404-style error rather than a clear rate-limit message.
  3. A transient GitHub API problem. GitHub occasionally returns errors during incidents. These usually clear on their own.
  4. A stale cached page or service worker. Your browser may be replaying an old request against a path that no longer exists.

What you can do

Step Action Expected result
1 Wait ~1 minute, then refresh the page The site's own recommendation; clears transient API or rate-limit issues
2 Hard refresh (Ctrl+Shift+R / Cmd+Shift+R) Bypasses cached responses and re-requests the data
3 Try a different network or disable a VPN Rules out IP-based rate limiting
4 Check GitHub's status page Confirms whether the API itself is having an incident
5 Open the browser console (F12 → Network) Shows the exact failing request URL, which tells you whether the path is wrong or the request was blocked

If steps 1–3 fix it, the cause was transient. If the error persists across networks and after a hard refresh, the site is likely requesting a GitHub path that no longer exists — a problem on OpenChaos.dev's side that only a site update can fix.

What the error does not mean

  • It does not mean OpenChaos.dev is offline or shut down. The static parts of the page still load.
  • It does not mean your account or access is blocked. The page fetches public data; there is no login involved in this failure.
  • It does not mean the weekly voting or PR merge process has stopped. Those happen on GitHub; the site is only a viewer for the results.

If you need the data now

Since the failing sections mirror GitHub data, you can usually get the same information directly from the project's GitHub repository — the merged PRs and their history are visible there regardless of whether the OpenChaos.dev front end can load them. That is the reliable fallback while the page's API call is broken.
