Why Particle Clicker Requires Landscape Mode and May Run Slowly
Updated
Particle Clicker only supports mobile play in landscape orientation, and its event display performance depends heavily on your hardware. The game's own About panel states both points directly: mobile devices must be held in landscape, and the event display "may rely heavily on your hardware." So if you see a rotate-your-device prompt on a phone, that is expected behavior, not a bug. If the game stutters, the cause is most likely the graphical event display rather than the click-and-upgrade logic.
Why landscape is required on mobile
The game was built during the CERN Webfest 2014 as a browser-based incremental game, and its interface is wide: a detector area, a data/reputation/funding bar, and panels for Research, HR, and Upgrades. The About panel says the game "runs best in landscape mode," and a dedicated notice tells mobile players they "can only play Particle Clicker on your mobile device in landscape orientation."
In practice:
- On a phone in portrait: expect the orientation notice instead of the game. Rotating the device to landscape is the fix.
- On a phone in landscape: the game loads, but the layout is still cramped compared with desktop.
- On desktop: landscape is the natural orientation, so no prompt appears — but the "runs best in landscape" advice still reflects the intended wide layout.
This is a design constraint of the pre-release (version 0.9), not a setting you can toggle.
Why the game can run slowly
The About panel separates two things: the game logic and the event display. The event display — the visual representation of particle events tied to your detector — is the part flagged as hardware-dependent. That means:
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Choppy or laggy visuals around the detector | Event display taxing your GPU/CPU | Close other tabs and apps; try a desktop browser |
| Game feels slow on an older phone | Hardware below what the display needs | Play on a more capable device or desktop |
| Prompt to rotate instead of gameplay | Portrait orientation on mobile | Rotate to landscape |
| Layout looks broken or cut off | Narrow viewport | Use landscape, or a wider window on desktop |
The game does not publish minimum hardware requirements, so "slow" is relative to your device. The honest guidance is: if the event display is the bottleneck, move to a stronger device rather than hunting for a graphics setting — none is documented.
Practical steps to get a smooth session
- Open the game at particle-clicker.web.cern.ch in a modern browser.
- On mobile, rotate to landscape before or right after loading. If you see the orientation notice, rotation is the only supported fix.
- On desktop, maximize the window so the wide layout has room.
- Reduce background load — close other tabs, streaming, or heavy apps — since the event display competes for the same hardware.
- Verify progress is saving. The interface shows a "Saved: [time]" indicator and a "Save now" button. If performance problems make you reload or switch devices, use "Save now" first. Note the game also has a "Restart" option, so avoid clicking it by accident.
- If something is genuinely broken — not just slow — report it through the GitHub issues link in the About panel, which the developers explicitly request for bugs in this pre-release.
What counts as a bug versus a limitation
- Expected, not a bug: the landscape-only prompt on mobile; slower event display on weaker hardware; the pre-release "Version: 0.9" label.
- Worth reporting: the game failing to load, the save indicator not updating, controls not responding in landscape, or visual glitches beyond ordinary lag. Use GitHub issues, as the About panel asks.
The game is free to play in the browser and its source is available on GitHub under an MIT license, so the landscape requirement and hardware sensitivity are properties of the published build rather than paywalls or account restrictions.
