Why pastes.dev Shows "You need to enable JavaScript to run this app"
Updated
pastes.dev is a client-side web app, so your browser has to run JavaScript before it can render anything. If JavaScript is disabled, blocked, or fails to load, the site has nothing to display and falls back to the message "You need to enable JavaScript to run this app." The fix is to turn JavaScript on for the site, or to find what is blocking it. If JavaScript is already enabled and you still see the message, the cause is usually an extension, a strict privacy setting, or a script that failed to load.
What the message actually means
The notice is not an error from a server. It is the app telling you that its interface is built and rendered in the browser, so without JavaScript there is no page to show. That is why the screen can look blank apart from that one line: the HTML shell loaded, but the code that draws the paste interface never ran.
This also explains why the message appears even when your internet connection is fine. The problem is local to your browser, not the network.
How to enable JavaScript
Chrome (desktop)
- Open the three-dot menu and go to Settings.
- Select Privacy and security, then Site settings.
- Open JavaScript.
- Make sure the setting is Sites can use JavaScript.
- If you use a "don't allow" list, check that
pastes.devis not on it.
Expected result: reload pastes.dev and the interface should render instead of the notice.
Firefox (desktop)
- Type
about:configin the address bar and accept the warning. - Search for
javascript.enabled. - Confirm the value is
true. - Reload the page.
Safari (macOS)
- Open Safari, then Settings.
- Go to the Security tab.
- Confirm Enable JavaScript is checked.
- Reload the page.
Mobile browsers
On most phones JavaScript is on by default, so the message usually points to something else. Check your browser's site settings for pastes.dev and confirm JavaScript is allowed, then reload.
If JavaScript is already enabled
Work through these in order, since each one can block scripts even when the browser setting looks correct:
- Extensions and content blockers. Ad blockers, script blockers, and privacy extensions can stop the app's code from running. Disable them for
pastes.devor try a private window with extensions off. - Strict tracking protection. Some browsers block scripts by default in stricter modes. Lower the setting for this site and reload.
- A stale or partial load. A cached or interrupted load can leave the app half-initialized. Do a hard reload (Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows/Linux, Cmd+Shift+R on macOS) or clear the site's cache.
- Corporate or network filters. A proxy, firewall, or DNS filter can strip scripts. Try another network to confirm.
- An outdated browser. Very old browsers may not support the features the app uses. Update to a current version.
Why the page looks blank
Without JavaScript, the app cannot build its interface, so there is no form, no text area, and no buttons to interact with. The single line of text is the only content the browser can show. Once scripts run, the paste interface appears and the message disappears.
Quick check
| Symptom | Likely cause | First thing to try |
|---|---|---|
| Message on every site | JavaScript off globally | Enable JavaScript in browser settings |
| Message only on pastes.dev | Site blocked or extension | Allow the site, disable blockers for it |
| Blank page, no message | Script failed to load | Hard reload, check network filter |
| Works in private window | Extension conflict | Disable extensions for the site |
If the message persists after enabling JavaScript and testing in a private window on another network, the block is likely outside your browser settings, such as a managed device policy or network filter.
