Why pollly Needs JavaScript Enabled (and How to Fix a Blank Page)

Updated

pollly (poll.ly) is a browser-based polling and brainstorming tool, and its web app will not load unless JavaScript is enabled in your browser. If you see a message like "pollly-web doesn't work properly without JavaScript enabled," that is the entire problem: the site is a client-side application, so the page you're viewing is only a shell until scripts run. Turn JavaScript on for poll.ly and reload — no account or payment is involved in this error.

What the message actually means

The text on the page comes from the app's own fallback notice. It appears when the browser blocks or fails to execute JavaScript, so the application code never starts. In practice you'll see one of two things:

  • A short notice telling you to enable JavaScript.
  • A blank or partially rendered page with no polls, buttons, or content.

Both point to the same cause. This is a technical requirement of how the site is built, not a sign-up, login, or billing issue.

How to enable JavaScript

The exact menu names differ by browser, but the path is similar everywhere.

Chrome (desktop)

  1. Open Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → JavaScript.
  2. Make sure the setting is Allowed (or "Sites can use JavaScript").
  3. If you previously blocked poll.ly specifically, find it under Not allowed to use JavaScript and remove it.
  4. Reload poll.ly.

Safari (macOS)

  1. Open Safari → Settings → Security (older versions: Preferences → Security).
  2. Check Enable JavaScript.
  3. Reload the page.

Firefox (desktop)

  1. Type about:config in the address bar and accept the warning.
  2. Search for javascript.enabled.
  3. Set it to true if it is false.
  4. Reload poll.ly.

Mobile browsers

JavaScript is on by default in most mobile browsers. If poll.ly still fails, check for a content blocker or an "extreme data saving" / "lite mode" setting that strips scripts, and disable it for this site.

Expected result: after enabling JavaScript and reloading, the pollly interface should render and become interactive.

If JavaScript is already enabled

A blank page can have other causes that look identical to the JavaScript notice.

Symptom Likely cause What to try
Notice about JavaScript, but it's enabled Extension or content blocker stripping scripts Disable ad/script blockers for poll.ly, or try a private window
Blank page, no notice Cached or stale files Hard reload (Ctrl+Shift+R / Cmd+Shift+R) or clear site data
Works in one browser, not another Browser-specific setting or profile Test in a second browser to isolate it
Fails on one network only Corporate proxy, firewall, or DNS filtering Try another network or disable the proxy

A quick isolation test: open poll.ly in a private/incognito window with extensions disabled. If it loads there, an extension or cached data is the culprit in your normal window.

Common sticking points

  • "I enabled JavaScript but nothing changed." Reload after changing the setting; some browsers only apply it to new page loads.
  • Blockers are the usual hidden cause. Script-blocking extensions can suppress the app even when the browser setting says JavaScript is allowed. Allowlist poll.ly.
  • This is not an account problem. The JavaScript requirement is separate from any question of registering or paying — the error appears before you reach any of that.
  • Old browser versions. Very outdated browsers may not support the features the app uses, which can also produce a broken page. Updating the browser is worth trying.

Bottom line

If pollly shows a JavaScript message or a blank page, enable JavaScript for poll.ly, reload, and disable script blockers if the problem persists. That resolves the error in most cases; if it doesn't, test in a private window or a different browser to find whether an extension, cache, or network filter is interfering.
