Why SampleRoulette Says It Needs JavaScript Enabled
Updated
SampleRoulette shows the message "We're sorry but sample-roulette doesn't work properly without JavaScript enabled. Please enable it to continue." because the site is built as a JavaScript application. The page you receive from the server is only a shell; the actual interface, the random track selection, and the YouTube playback are all assembled by JavaScript in your browser. If JavaScript is blocked, disabled, or fails to run, there is nothing for the page to display, so it falls back to that notice. This is a runtime requirement, not an error on your side or a sign the site is down.
What the message actually means
The notice is a standard fallback from a JavaScript framework. It appears when the app's root element never gets mounted, which happens in a few common situations:
- JavaScript is disabled in your browser settings.
- A content blocker, privacy extension, or script blocker is preventing the site's scripts from loading.
- The page loaded but a script failed (network hiccup, blocked CDN, aggressive firewall).
- You are viewing a cached or partially loaded version of the page.
In every case, the fix is the same: make sure JavaScript can run, then reload.
How to enable JavaScript and reload
The exact menu names vary by browser, but the path is similar everywhere.
Chrome / Edge (desktop)
- Open Settings.
- Go to Privacy and security → Site settings → JavaScript.
- Make sure the setting is Sites can use JavaScript (the default).
- If you use a "blocked" list, check that
sampleroulette.iois not on it. - Return to the tab and reload the page.
Firefox (desktop)
- Type
about:configin the address bar and accept the warning. - Search for
javascript.enabled. - Confirm it is set to
true. - Reload the page.
Safari (macOS)
- Open Safari → Settings → Security.
- Ensure Enable JavaScript is checked.
- Reload the page.
Mobile browsers
JavaScript is on by default in Chrome, Safari, and Firefox on mobile. If the message still appears, the cause is almost always an extension, a content blocker, or a private/incognito mode with strict tracking protection. Try a normal tab with blockers paused.
Expected result: after enabling JavaScript and reloading, the fallback text is replaced by the SampleRoulette interface and you can start pulling random tracks.
If enabling JavaScript doesn't fix it
Work through these in order, since each one addresses a different failure point:
- Pause script blockers. Extensions like uBlock Origin, NoScript, Privacy Badger, or Brave Shields can block the app's own scripts. Allow the site, then reload.
- Try a private window with extensions disabled. If it works there, an extension is the culprit.
- Hard reload. Use
Ctrl+Shift+R(Windows/Linux) orCmd+Shift+R(macOS) to bypass the cache. - Check the network. A corporate or school firewall can block the CDN that serves the scripts. Try a different network.
- Update your browser. Very old versions may not support the JavaScript features the app relies on.
Why the site is built this way
SampleRoulette's purpose is to randomly surface obscure, potentially sampleable tracks from thousands of YouTube videos. That means it has to query a large pool, pick a random entry, and embed a player — all without a full page reload. A JavaScript app handles that interaction smoothly; a static HTML page could not. The trade-off is that the site depends entirely on JavaScript being available, which is why the fallback message exists instead of a degraded but usable page.
Quick checklist
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Fallback message on first visit | JavaScript disabled | Enable JavaScript, reload |
| Message only in one browser | Extension or setting in that browser | Pause blockers, check site settings |
| Message after it previously worked | Cache or temporary script failure | Hard reload, try another network |
| Message on mobile | Content blocker or strict privacy mode | Disable blocker, use a normal tab |
Once JavaScript is running, the message disappears and the site behaves as intended. If it persists after all of the above, the problem is on the network or extension side rather than with SampleRoulette itself.
