How DocuGenerate Generates Documents from Word Templates and Data
Updated
DocuGenerate turns a Word template plus a set of data into one PDF per data record. You prepare a Word file with merge tags where dynamic text should appear, supply the data as JSON or an Excel file, and the system replaces each tag with the matching value to produce a document. This works for invoices, letters, contracts, agreements, and certificates, and you can run it through the web app, no-code integrations, or a REST API.
What you need before starting
- A template in DOCX, DOC, ODT, TXT, or SQL format.
- Data in JSON, XLSX, XLS, ODS, or CSV format.
- Merge tags placed in the template wherever dynamic content belongs.
Step-by-step: generating documents
1. Prepare the Word template
Design the template in the document editor you already use, as an ordinary Word file you own and can download anytime. Insert tags such as [Name] at each point where data should be substituted.
2. Upload the template
After uploading, DocuGenerate automatically detects the merge tags based on the template content, so you do not have to register them manually.
3. Provide the data
Supply the data as JSON or in an Excel file. Each data item becomes one generated document.
4. Generate
For every data item, a document is generated from the template by replacing the merge tags with the actual data. The output is a high-quality PDF.
Customizing tags and content
You can change the tag delimiters from [Name] to a custom style, for example «Name» or {Name}.
Beyond plain text, templates support images, tables, lists, conditions, and QR codes, all driven by merge tags.
Generating at scale
DocuGenerate exposes a REST API so developers can generate documents from their own applications without handling the underlying document generation technology. A PDF Generation API Quick Start Guide is available.
Standard features on every plan
| Feature | What it means |
|---|---|
| Documents, not pages | A 100-page report counts as one document. |
| Links never expire | Generated documents stay available until you delete them, rather than being purged after a retention window. |
| Overage, not upgrades | You can go past your monthly volume instead of being forced to upgrade. |
These are described as standard on all plans, including the Free one.
