Backgammon: What It Is and How to Play Online

Backgammon is a two-player dice-and-strategy board game where each side races 15 checkers around a 24-point board and tries to bear them all off first. You can play it free in a browser against real players or bots on FunNode, where it's listed as a medium-difficulty, 2-player board game — no download or account required to start.

What Backgammon Is and How You Win

Backgammon mixes luck (dice) with decisions (which checker to move). Each player starts with 15 checkers on the board and moves them in opposite directions. The first player to move all 15 checkers off the board — a step called bearing off — wins the game.

Because both players move through the same 24 points in opposite directions, your checkers and your opponent's checkers constantly interact. That interaction is what makes blocking, hitting, and timing matter.

Board Setup and Starting Position

The board has 24 narrow triangles called points, grouped into four quadrants of six. Each player's home board is the quadrant where their checkers finish.

The standard starting position (using the convention that each player's own points are numbered 1–24) is:

Checkers Where they start
2 On the 24-point (your opponent's 1-point)
5 On the 13-point
3 On the 8-point
5 On the 6-point

The two sides mirror each other, so the board looks symmetrical at the start. Your 1-point and your opponent's 24-point are the same physical point.

How a Turn Works: Dice, Movement, Hitting, and the Bar

On your turn you roll two dice. Each die is a separate move, and you can use them on one checker or split them between two checkers.

Key mechanics:

  • Movement direction: You move your checkers from your 24-point toward your 1-point (your home board).
  • Blocked points: You cannot land on a point holding two or more of your opponent's checkers. A single opponent checker is fair game.
  • Hitting: If you land on a point with exactly one opponent checker (a blot), that checker is sent to the bar — the raised ridge in the middle of the board.
  • The bar: A checker on the bar must re-enter your opponent's home board before you can make any other move. If the entry points are blocked, you lose that turn.
  • Doubles: If you roll the same number on both dice, you play that number four times instead of twice.

If only one of your two dice can be legally played, you play that one and forfeit the other. If neither can be played, you pass.

Bearing Off and Ending the Game

Once all 15 of your checkers are in your home board, you can start bearing off. You remove a checker by rolling a number that matches its point:

  • Roll a 6 and you can remove a checker from your 6-point.
  • Roll higher than the highest occupied point, and you can remove a checker from that highest point.
  • If you roll a number for an empty point, you must move a checker within the home board instead, if a legal move exists.

The first player to remove all 15 checkers wins. In match play, some results score extra (a gammon is a double win, a backgammon a triple), but for a casual online game the basic win is what counts.
