Blackjack: What It Is and How to Play Online
Blackjack is a card game where you try to get a hand total closer to 21 than the dealer's without going over. On FunNode, it's listed as an easy card game for 2–7 players, playable free in your browser against real players or bots — no download and no account required to play. If you already know the goal is "21 without busting," the sections below cover card values, your four main actions, how the dealer plays, and how to start a table online.
Card values and the target number
Each card counts toward your hand total:
| Card | Value |
|---|---|
| 2–10 | Face value (a 7 counts as 7) |
| Jack, Queen, King | 10 each |
| Ace | 1 or 11, whichever helps your hand more |
The flexible Ace is the core mechanic. A hand with an Ace and a 6 can be counted as 7 (Ace = 1) or 17 (Ace = 11). A hand where the Ace is counted as 11 is called a soft hand; once counting the Ace as 11 would bust you, it automatically counts as 1 and the hand becomes hard.
A two-card hand of an Ace plus a 10-value card is a blackjack (natural 21). It beats a regular 21 made from three or more cards, and it's the best hand you can be dealt.
Going over 21 is a bust — you lose immediately, regardless of what the dealer does afterward.
Your four main actions
On your turn you choose one of these, depending on the table's rules:
- Hit — take another card. Repeat until you stand or bust.
- Stand — keep your current total and end your turn.
- Double down — double your bet, take exactly one more card, then stop. Usually reserved for strong starting hands.
- Split — when your first two cards are a pair, split them into two separate hands, each with its own bet. You then play each hand out.
Some tables also offer insurance when the dealer shows an Ace, but this is an optional side bet and not part of basic play.
How the dealer plays and who wins
The dealer follows a fixed rule rather than making choices: the dealer must hit until reaching a minimum total (commonly 17) and then stand. This is why your decisions matter more than the dealer's — the dealer has no discretion.
You win in these cases:
- Your total is higher than the dealer's without busting.
- The dealer busts and you don't.
- You're dealt a blackjack and the dealer doesn't have one (usually pays more than even money).
You lose if you bust, or if the dealer's final total beats yours. Equal totals are a push — your bet is returned.

Common points to watch
- Don't chase 21. Standing on 19 or 20 is usually stronger than risking a bust for one more point.
- The Ace changes your options. A soft hand can be hit safely because the Ace can drop to 1 — a hard hand cannot.
- Blackjack beats a made 21. If you're dealt an Ace and a ten-value card, you've already got the strongest hand.
- Dealer rules are fixed. You can't influence the dealer's draw, so base decisions on your own total and the dealer's visible card.
If you want to practice without pressure, the bot option on FunNode lets you play hands anytime before sitting down at a table with other players.
