How to Check if a Specific Service Is Down on isUpMap

Updated

isUpMap is a real-time status heatmap that shows whether 80+ popular internet services are up, degraded, or down right now. To check a specific service, open isupmap.com in a JavaScript-enabled browser, find the service on the live heatmap, and read its current state; then check the Recent incidents section and the per-service uptime view for context. The live dashboard requires JavaScript — without it, you'll only see the static list of monitored services, not their status.

What isUpMap shows you

The site monitors a fixed directory of services and reports one of three states for each:

  • Up — the service is responding normally.
  • Degraded — the service is reachable but performing below normal.
  • Down — the service is not responding.

Alongside the current state, the dashboard surfaces recent incidents and per-service uptime, so you can tell the difference between a one-off blip and a sustained outage.

Step-by-step: checking one service

  1. Open isupmap.com in a browser with JavaScript enabled. If JavaScript is off, the page will show the monitored service list but not the live up/down heatmap, incident history, or uptime data.
  2. Locate your service on the live heatmap. Services are grouped by category (see the table below), so scan the relevant group rather than the whole grid.
  3. Read the state. Up, degraded, or down — this is the current check, not a historical average.
  4. Open the per-service view for that service. The site provides direct lookups phrased as questions, e.g. "is GitHub down?" or "is OpenAI down?". This gives you the service-specific uptime information rather than the aggregate heatmap.
  5. Check Recent incidents. If the service shows degraded or down, the incident list tells you whether it's a known, ongoing event or something the heatmap caught on its own.

Expected result: you end up with a current state plus enough context (incident history, uptime) to decide whether the problem is on the service's side or yours.

Services you can check

The directory covers 80+ services across these categories:

Category Examples monitored
AI OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, Groq, Perplexity, Hugging Face, ElevenLabs, Cursor
Developer & Cloud GitHub, Cloudflare, AWS, Vercel, Netlify, npm, Docker, GitLab, Supabase, Firebase
Payments Stripe, Coinbase, Shopify, Plaid, Square, Klarna
Communication Discord, Slack, Zoom, Twilio, SendGrid, Resend, Intercom
Productivity & Media Notion, Figma, Dropbox, Reddit, Linear, Airtable, Canva, Datadog

The full status directory is browsable on the site, so if your service isn't in the examples above, check the directory before assuming it isn't covered.

Common snags

  • Blank or static page. Almost always JavaScript being disabled or blocked. Enable it and reload; the heatmap, incidents, and uptime all depend on it.
  • "Fetching service status…" that never resolves. The dashboard pulls live data, so a stalled fetch usually means a network, extension, or content-blocker problem on your end — not that every service is down.
  • Reading the heatmap as a verdict on your own connection. A service showing "up" while you can't reach it points to a local issue (DNS, ISP, VPN, firewall) rather than an outage.
  • Mobile layout. The site notes it is best viewed on desktop, so a cramped or partially rendered heatmap on a phone is a display limitation, not missing data.

How to use the result

If the service is down or degraded and appears in Recent incidents, the problem is on the provider's side — waiting or checking their own status page is the practical move. If the service shows up but you still can't reach it, treat it as a local problem and troubleshoot your connection, DNS, or any proxy/VPN in between. If the service isn't in the directory at all, isUpMap can't answer the question for it.
